Private Siren's Summit

This was the coldest place he could find this time of year. Yet even the Summit was humid and sticky with heat that clung to his grullo coat. Shaking it briefly, the limp appendage on his back twitched with it, and as he righted himself his eyes looked out into the distance. He had been looking for the lake. He was too hot these days, and honestly quite dirty, so splashing about in the waters was the perfect remedy. Working his way down on his ice-laden hooves, the colt eventually found himself at the edge of the beautiful lake.

At first he dipped his hoof in as a tentative test of the temperature, before splashing in with the utmost eagerness. All at once the tension fell away from his body, and he let the waters gently hold him up with each gentle lapping of waves. With eyes slowly drooping he sighed, letting his mind for once come to a stand still. Too much had been happening to him these days. Being deaf and still functioning like he did in the Rift was no easy task, but he still managed to wake up each day ready to take on the world. As he lazily floated around in the depths, churning his hooves slowly, Leroy remained atop his head looking rather irritated. This was not what the spider had been expecting when his companion had decided to take a bath.

No longer wanting to displease the tiny golem, the boy slowly stood and began to work on grooming his coat. It was with slow motions that he brushed away the sweat and grime, it pooling in a murky cloud around him in the waters. As he made his way slowly up to his shoulder it was then that he had a moment to look at his soaked wing. It glistened in the beautiful sunlight, drying rather quickly thanks to the intense heat. Although his feathers had a beautiful gloss to them that glimmered nicely in the light; the way his wing fell across his body in a crooked way sent a sinking feeling to his stomach.

Ever since his encounter with Valkyrie he was not at all pleased with how they looked. They were a reminder of what he wasn't, what was bad about him. This had only been reinforced when he had met Rixen. Mentally flinching at the encounter the boy decided to focus on other parts of his body, deliberately avoiding his wing at all cost during cleaning.

The pair had traversed through the thick heat of Scorch to find various plants that they could bring back to Halyven in the attempts of starting a sort of herb collection. Khairi had managed to craft some strange, haphazard looking bag that he carried slung in his sharp beak that held the contents of their travels. So far, there wasn’t much to it, aside from a small amount of a strange looking weed that interested Kiada enough to pick a few and keep them to see what kind of properties it might hold. After gathering a few of those and tossing them into Khairi’s bag, Kiada continued to climb the Summit in futile attempts at finding some other things to accompany the Sunweed.

Sweat coated her back, making her white blanketed spots opalescent in the sheen and darkening her gilded hide into a rich bronze hue as she worked herself in the sun and heat on her task. She wasn’t even aware of the child that bathed not far from her – no, instead she simply smacked her parched lips quietly, following the stream to the source where she imagined the water would be colder and quite possibly more enjoyable. However, as she approached, Khairi crooned an alert as he sat along her back in his exhaustion. His wings were draped over her own, giving her an appearance of having super small white wings along her withers the way he lay sprawled out.

After a few moments, Kiada found the child as he bathed, taking care to clean everything else but his wings. Curiously, she watched for a few moments before approaching slowly as to not frighten him. There was some part of her deep down that felt as though the colt was familiar, but she couldn’t quite place it. Regardless, she let her icy gaze land on the child and offer him a small smile before she dipped her head to drink from the stream, upriver from where he bathed, before nickering to him in greeting, part of her wanting to say that he had a great idea when it came to a bath, considering she wanted to do the exact same thing, but the water here seemed not quite deep enough for her large, nearly seventeen hand frame.

Hello.” She called out to him, her ivory rimmed ears perked forward, waiting to see if he’d allow her to come closer.

He had managed to turn his head in time to immediately notice the gold and white beauty as she made her approach to the waters. He took a moment to study her, the gears in his mind beginning to turn as something told him that he knew her. As she made her way closer he got a better look at her face, the dark markings a contrast against her gold complexion. It was then that the gears snapped into place in his mind, and he knew who she was. This was one of his nurse mother's children. Although he had never really spoken to her, they were both advocates of wandering the Edge and sometimes outside of it, and thus he would see her quite often.

Turning himself to face her a little better he watched her lips part as she smiled, and although he couldn't hear it he assumed that she had attempted to greet him. Letting his eyes maneuver her body once again, he paused his grooming to approach her head on. Letting the droplets trickle down his coat he stopped a few feet from her, eyes focused and ears entirely pricked forward. Although they were useless in this situation; he still couldn't change the instinctive motion of using them. There was a moment of more silence, before the boy released air from his nostrils and spoke in a slightly off key tone,"World's Edge."

Thankfully, she didn’t frighten the boy. Khairi lifted his head and body enough to continue fanning his wings, airing them above her in an attempt to help cool both her and himself down while Kiada stood looking at the boy. Khairi glanced over, but felt complete disinterest while his body tried to adjust to the heat. Kiada, meanwhile, noticed that the boy didn’t say anything to her before moving over to stand before her. Her head lowered instinctively toward him as silence overtook their interaction before he broke it by saying “World’s Edge.” Suddenly, the words reverberated in her mind, bouncing off one another while she tried to figure out just where she had seen the boy before.

He must have been young, and suddenly Kiada remembered that her mother had been a nurse mare to a set of foals when her sister was young. Her eyes widened slightly, but she nodded her head as she looked upon the boy, having sworn she may have saw him in her exploration attempts. “I lived there, yes.” She admitted quietly, unaware that the boy couldn’t hear her. She offered him a gentle smile of encouragement. “You knew my mother didn’t you?” She questioned him, tilting her head slightly before lowering it again to take a few more drinks of water. After a few moments, she submerged her face into the water, her crescent shaped horn poking out of the water before she lifted her head again, shaking it so the droplets flung wildly, a small playful smile on her lips as she looked to see if the droplets landed anywhere near the boy in a small attempt at trying to play with him.

He could tell when it clicked for her, and as her faced morphed into recognition a small smile was upon her maw. His eyes studied her as the flames upon her back flickered. He had remembered ogling over them the first time, watching different animals take shape with each passing emotion that became evident. He was surprised she hadn't noticed him and chased him off during those days. Though it would make sense, given how quiet and subdued he usually was. Letting silence remain in the air he finally noticed the movement of her lips, and as he studied her face he tried so hard to understand what she might be saying.

Leroy was no help, simply fiddling with his mane and whirring above him, leaving the Vynter at a loss to what to say next. So instead he waited, putting together the unique features on her complexion, the one she shared with her mother. That was when her name clicked back into his mind, and he watched her for only a moment before awkwardly speaking once again,"Rexanna." He was growing impatient of this disability he had, it hindering a lot of his day to day. He didn't want to continue with having to play lip reader, but what was he supposed to do? Oh, right. He had to break something. But he couldn't really ask someone if he could break one of their belongings could he? He hadn't really tried. But what else was he supposed to do at this point? It wasn't as if he had ever been told it was bad to ask.

"I need to break something," was the next abrupt wording from his mouth. Why he didn't simply choose to say that he was in fact deaf so she would understand was beyond anyone. But he didn't, and instead he looked on and around her for something that he might be able to break. That's when he spotted it; the bag her strange creature had been holding at the moment. He could smell the herbs radiating from it, but his sense of curiosity momentarily curbed his need to break something when he realized he didn't know what the feathered bird was. Taking a step forward and to the side he approached the mare, and although he was almost 2 years younger than she his long yearling legs brought him almost to her height.

Blue eyes looked at the creature, head tilting and ears flopping against his skull as he tried to understand what it was. Could he touch it? Or would it grow angry with him for doing so? Lifting his nose in the birds direction he snorted, attempting to skim his feathers along the chest of this beast. Would it let him? Only time would tell.

After a few moments, she watched as he studied her, his ears perked to listen though as time went on she wasn’t sure if the boy could hear her. Kiada waited, thinking that perhaps he might say something along the lines of “I can’t hear you” considering the way he could speak a few words beforehand. Surely he could’ve spoke at one time, unless he chose not to answer her questions – which given the strange things within the Rift and what it did to people, she could understand if he didn’t want to talk fully. It was quite the experience to get torn into the Rift and try and live where everything wants to kill you.

But then the boy spoke, speaking her mother’s name. It sparked something deep within her, the childish part of her that still yearned for her mother’s touch. She pushed it down, burying it deep within her as she offered him a smile and a nod. “My name’s Kiada.” She offered the boy after he spoke her mother’s name, then he suddenly blurted that he needed to break something. Kiada’s eyes widened slightly as she tilted her head with a small chuckle. “What for?” She questioned him, wondering if he wanted to break something just for the sake of breaking it or for a trial, much like how she had to convince someone she hated them.

His attention didn’t last long on her, however, instead he moved to her side, his head lifting to the bird perched upon Kiada’s back as Khairi moved to watch the boy with his scarlet rimmed gaze. He still carried the makeshift sack in his beak, his head rapidly moving to the side so he could view the boy better to note if he was a threat, his wings still splayed out should he need to fly. Khairi stared the boy down as Vynter stared back, yet Khairi wasn’t intimidated or even frightened by him. Kiada craned her head around to watch the encounter, watching quietly as Vynter reached forward and snorted at Khairi, his nose brushing the pale feathers along Khairi’s chest.

Khairi’s head tilted slightly, and he uttered a rough sound from his throat at the feeling, clamping his jaw down on the bag as he cocked his head again. Quietly, Khairi reached a wing forward, aiming to rake a few feathers along Vynter’s face, much like he often did with Kiada when she was a child. It was a soothing gesture, one he did often to calm himself as well as her when they’d stay out of the Edge or the Basin. "And he's Khairi." Kiada offered the boy quietly, continuing to watch the exchange.

There was something that passed between him and the creature upon her shoulders. As their eyes locked it was obvious the raptor was alert, uncertain and unwilling to move. Yet as his maw softly stroked along his chest did the bird soften, soon placing his wing upon the boy's alabaster cheek. Letting his eyes flutter close he relaxed, enjoying the soft moment quite briefly.

Then at once he was pulling away, studying the creature quietly with his big doe eyes. It was then that he noticed the mare was again speaking, and although he could not hear, he had managed to make out her last word. She was likely asking why he needed to break something. What other question would one ask after being told someone needed to break something. It was with a nonchalance he turned back to the bird, studying its wing before suddenly grasping at its bag and tearing it open. With a satisfying rip the herbs fell away onto the dry earth, and the tattered fabric dropped from his lips.

Around them it was as if time stood still, for nothing made a sound and even the air grew stagnant. Vynter remained focused on the fabric at his hooves, waiting in masked anticipation for what was to come next. Then all at once, as if it had never been, the world began to move. His body shivered as a rush of sounds found their way into his ears again, the birds chirping, the lake lapping at the shore. To go from dead silence to multiple sounds at once was an overwhelming experience, and the boy staggered back in an attempt to brace himself. Shaking his head for a moment he looked at her and spoke matter of fact,"to hear again."

Then it was as if he realized why exactly he had been deaf originally, and soon he was swinging his head around to look and see if he had been changed in any way. Yet all his eyes fell upon was a decrepit wing, limp and crooked upon his back as the feathers dried in the sun. Then it was as if his world shattered away, falling into a million pieces at his feet and obliterating before his eyes. Letting ivory lashes fall over his eyes for a moment, there was no reaction but a soft tone from his lips,"it didn't work." It was with that realization did his body almost sag, his eyes hazing over in resignation before he looked to the beautiful mare and her vulture again. His eyes glanced at the mess he had made, the mess that was meaningless and he didn't want to cause even. All he felt now was numb.

A soft click left his mouth, and Leroy was in action. Down the spider jumped to the ground, skittering at a fast pace towards the bag that had been left mangled. With quick work it began to spin, and within minutes not only had the bag been fully repaired, but the seams had been stitched tighter for ease of carrying. Leroy then skittered back to Vynter's side, carrying the pouch as he went and setting it delicately by his mouth. The boy silently grabbed it between his teeth, careful to not tear it once again, before resting it on Kiada's back gently. Nosing it to the bird he soon pulled away, before looking to the golden beauty and dipping his head. Hoping that would be enough to make amends the boy abruptly turned, and although slow in his pacing he walked with a stiffness that showed what little motivation he currently had.

She hadn’t been paying attention much to their interactions, instead she simply listened while Khairi watched the boy, listening as the vulture gave her updates about what the boy was doing. Little things here and there, such as “He’s looking at me funny” and “I’m not sure what to do, but it’s weird.” Things of which Kiada needed to try and stifle a chuckle for, not like the boy could hear it. When suddenly Khairi’s wings flared and he screeched into her mind “HE BROKE MY BAG.

Well, that was certainly a way to get things going. He must have really meant what he said, and as the herbs fell to the ground and Khairi squawked his displeasure, Kiada had to manage not to laugh for the poor birds sake. But her heart churned slowly while Vynter said “to hear again.” So he must have been able to hear before, but something had caused him to become deaf. Her head swiveled around as she shook her body slightly in a subtle way of telling Khairi to get a grip on himself as she peered at the boy.

Kiada watched silently while Vynter’s head swiveled around in an effort to try and find what might have changed when her eyes landed on his disfigured wings. Suddenly, he lowered his lids over his eyes and muttered “It didn’t work,” before Khairi had a chance to retaliate against the boy, the vulture noticed at the same time Kiada did that the little machine that was hidden on the boy was suddenly spinning some silk. Her eyes widened slightly, but she remained silent, watching while Vynter reached up to drop the bag in front of a flustered Khairi, before turning and leaving.

Uh, thanks!” She stammered after him, watching him take his leave while Kiada and Khairi stared at each other out of confusion before moving on to gather more random herbs. Deep down, the harpy hoped the boy would be able to fix what was wrong with him.
