When there's madness, when there's poison in your head
When the sadness leaves you broken in your bed
Melita's whispered question echoed faintly in his ears, something to be answered another time as Iskra leapt away and threw himself into the familiar embrace of the sky. His heart was hammering so hard in his chest he was sure it was visibly jumping beneath his hide, and the rush of the blood was a roar so loud in his ears that at first, he did not heart Zahra's words. Iskra was still caught up in the moment, still tense with concentration and taut with the hope that something good could be accomplished.

As the dust settled (quite literally locust dust) though and the adrenaline abated, Iskra blinked. Wings that stroked the air quieted and slowed, and Iskra cast a teal eye down to the fallen stallion that lay breathing. He was hesitant at first, afraid he'd been too late, or not strong enough, or that those things that he'd watched burst into flame had been important. Yet his fears were eased as Zahra called up pleasantly to him, and so the colt drifted down to land gingerly beside her.

Her da, Iskra thought with awe as he gazed upon the mare resettling the unconscious stud, acutely aware of the single wing he bore. Iskra hadn't been watching all the chaos of the battlefield, so hadn't seen the gallant beast have it eaten from his side, so instead quietly puzzled at how he'd gotten so airborne with one wing anyway. Maybe he had a metal one like Zekle and it had fallen off or something?

As Zahra finished and her gaze turned to him, Iskra was bolted to the spot, overtaken by the depth of emotion he found within them. A warmth flooded his chest, grateful that she wasn't forced to lose her father as he had his mother. His feathers bristled faintly with pride, and his features cracked into a wan, embarrassed smile. "Oh no," he stammered in response, "there shouldn't be any debts for saving someone. Will he be okay?"

A pause, then he extended his muzzle and his name, "I'm Iskra by the way. I'm glad I could help your da, there's enough bad in this world that it's always best to spread more good."

He glanced over, spying Melita with someone else in some need. Not for the first time Iskra wished he had some ability to heal, or that they could reorganize themselves into herds again. A time like this he'd normally be searching for the Sun Physicians, but they were gone now, scattered if they made it through, and probably powerless without the Sun. Iskra sighed softly, the feeling of accomplishment switfly consumed by all the grief the Rift continued to eminate. After this he'd head over to Melita and make sure she was okay, and then get the hell out of here before any ghosts came back.
Iskra
I will hold you in the depths of your despair
And it's all in the name of love
