One moment there had been brutality (she’d recognized it in the glimpses of death and desecration, the way the earth had been ruined, soiled, spoiled, how she’d wanted to cry out to those fearless warriors, how she’d wanted to join them but she’d been too little, yet fierce; how the apprehension had still curled down her chest, how she’d stood there, stock still, uncertain of anything), and the next, they’d all fallen.

Then it was the unknown all over again – like she’d been reborn, reincarnated, and forced to learn every spot, every sanction, every haven, every sanctuary, and when she blinked out into the shadows, the mist, the curling, listless, languid fog; there was nothing familiar. There was no sand, no draconic awakenings, no pleasant sun, no mother pressing her maw to her crown, no Geen promising another flight lesson – just the eternal, unknown abyss, sinister in its incantations, coaxing and enticing in its eldritch windings. She coughed and sputtered, released a breath she’d been holding, then pressed her eyes together, imagining that this was all a dream, some heedless nightmare because she’d been present for calamity and it was over, it was over, and when she woke again they’d be home, safe and sound, tucked into dunes and tidings of another day, another promise –

But the honeybee child opened her gaze, and nothing had changed.

Sila murmured, a vigilant, tiny lightning storm tucked between her feathers, and Melita hastened her near, tucked her close to her chest, whispered sonnets and stanzas and silly stories her mother had spoken once. It was all she could do to keep her fear at bay, to not let it wash over her completely, to not let herself surrender to the terror, to the horror, of the bewitching unknown (any other day she might have been tempted to race into the surroundings and see what the world had to offer, but it wasn’t her empire, aglow and incandescent). She swallowed down the horror, the screams, the rigid, curled stance, trying to untangle her legs, attempting not to cry into the glistening flickers of Sila’s coat. Her stare shifted along the fog, hoping for clarity, for her mother or sister to come waltzing into the doom and save her from a lifetime of lost whims and wishes, even Geen, because he seemed powerful and like he could’ve taken on any monsters coiled into the void.

Her sister’s little shout managed to bound for her soul though, and the girl quickly yelled back, always loud, always raucous, daring, bold, intrepid. “Clem!” She hollered again and again, twitching her ears, trying to follow the sound of her twin’s voice, she’d known it all her life and would do so until the end of their days, widening her nostrils to take in the sweet smell of flowers, and then she knew, she knew, she was there - followed and beholden and reached out to snag her sibling in a ferocious, necessary hug, clinging to her as if life depended on it (and perhaps it did), nape thrown over her neck, maw pressed into her beautiful mane. “Clem, I’m so glad to see you,” Melita whispered, not backing away, just holding, embracing. “Have you seen mom?” She murmured too, right into her lovely tassels, so if the girl wanted to pretend she hadn’t heard it, that their world wasn’t falling completely apart, she could.
