The Portal
Claws were ripped from flesh of his mother and magical forces of the portal pressed into him. It drains him, bleeds him, sucking from him all that small body has till there was nothing. The bird shuts his eyes away, flames growing listless and dull, fading.
Out from the portal the bird falls, but its magic is sapped, its energy gone, and the rain worsens it. The few drops that hit his body are like probing fingers…but he barely feels it as the burning grows once more. When he finally crashes to the earth he’s back to a pale gold rusty colt.
He hears the call of his Da, it causes the babe to stir, but the call wasn’t for him. His head rising up, looking out. With exhaustion he calls out a return, even if it wasn’t for him he doesn’t care. He’s cold, and wet. So he calls to Da. He wants- He needs- He needs Ma. Oh gods Ma… Sea blue search out desperately for her as memory, seen through the fire bird’s eyes, come back to him. It makes his stomach knot and his head feel light. Ma. He needed to find Ma. Her screams began to fill his ears even though they had been shouted worlds away, the memory was searing into him. And Casca! He’d left Casca! The babe calls out again, this time fear openly piercing through it as he scrambles up to try and stand.
