How much does a foal sense from inside his mother’s womb? How much of the heartache and sorrow reaches the babe in his undeveloped state? Can he feel his dam’s fears and be aware of his family’s hardships? Who knows?

Mika would not remember his birth, but maybe one day someone would tell him about this night. The night when he first got a glimpse of the moon and stars above, when he took his first deep breath of air. Maybe.

He came to this world, this fearsome dimension, the wrong way - but in the right way. His hind legs were stretched out behind him and his wings lay over his head. How he had managed to twist and stretch that way was beyond anyone too know, but he caused his mother minimal pain even in this awkward position. Before long he lay on the grass. Hidden under huge gray, black and white wings he took his first breath. Without hesitation the foal had began his life. Above the mother and son shone the moon through the clouds, but its light was redundant in this already vibrant forest.

The foal under the glowing willow suddenly made a sound. His deep, first breath had lasted longer than normal and his exhale came in a bone rattling sneeze! His entire body flickered like a faulty light fixture with the violent exhaust of air. Then, as the clouds parted before the moon, all over the colt’s body dapples lit up, glowing like large stars on his hide.

Mika lifted his head, his small neck trembled and his wings fell away from his face. A diamond shaped star and a disconnected strip adorned his brow and nose ridge and his eyes where teal. There would be no doubt what family he came from and surely he would grow to love each and every one of his relatives. With such a devoted mother, how could he not?

A small, hoarse nigh escaped his throat as he saw his dam. Mika’s story had begun…
