Riptide Isles
let the winds erase me,
like the memory of a kiss
This third life has started out much like her second. Lyanna wandered with no purpose, trying not to succumb to the weight of grief that dragged her low. Loss was heavy in her heart and here, unlike Helovia, there was no purpose for her, nothing to keep her tethered to the world. In Helovia, at least, she had become a healer, given herself some purpose even if she’d mostly wandered Helovia in the beginning.
Here, there were no herds, no herbs she knew and the only two tasks she could do were not ones she wanted. Kaos’s task was infinitely better – learn and explore. She could do those things. She could explore, could let the weight of grief drag her around from one land to the next, could hold polite conversation with those that were native to his place. The other task she could not face – taking inventory of those left alive. That task meant facing more deaths, and she could not yet stomach more deaths.
Already Ru and Glasgow haunt her now as well, tethered to her heart as her family is, ghosts that she cannot shake. Today she flies, thinking Ru would like that, would like some time in the sky on a day that isn’t miserably rainy and impossible. Though it will be a day for surprises, it seems. She’s too close to the Riptide Isles, and the buffeting winds finally drag her out of her thoughts for sheer need. If she doesn’t turn her course, she is going to end up thrown into the violent ocean, and the one thing she knows for a fact is that, despite everything, she is not yet ready to die.
Before she can turn course though, the winds die, and there’s a beautiful light coming from the center of the suddenly still sea. Lyanna slows her flight, looping around the strange occurrence. A familiar form catches her attention, a pale girl who flies straight into what might easily be a trap. “Erthe!” she calls, partly to try and stop the girl, partly because she’s simply pleased to see another familiar face in the sky. She angles her wings as well, making her way closer to her friend, closer to the light, though unlike Erthe, Lyanna is not quite aiming to dive headfirst into it.
Lyanna is quickly deterred from her plan though when the light continues to grow, only to be replaced with a tigress. Too beautiful to be mortal, Lyanna pulls at the wind around her and uses a gust to bring her back up, away from potentially crashing into something other worldly. A goddess? Or something else entirely? Beneath the paws of the tigress, the world becomes beautiful, peaceful, too good to be true.
And oh, how untrue it is. The sky rips apart, and Lyanna dives, whirling, trying to get out of the way as lighting tears toward the goddess, her scream ringing through the space around them. Lyanna’s heart breaks for a creature she never even really knew, but a creature that had looked like hope for a glimmering moment.
