the Rift
The Rift is hungry, starving as you step into the world. It eyes you, millions of glowing lights in your peripheral vision that blink in and out of existence, surveying and studying you, as though it can look through you and see just how many delicious things you bring with.
But it finds only one thing in its scrutiny. And it reaches out, fast as lightning (perhaps lightning does crack somewhere above from manufactured rumbling clouds) and caresses you swiftly, digging its branching forks deep within you to snuff the magic from you and swallow it whole.
Then it recedes, back into the crevices of which it came from. The eyes no longer watch you, and you are free to go.
