a calm sea never made a skilled sailor
The last thing he saw was the dark blue hue of wings and horns entering the black portal. Andikan, his companion, chomped down harder on his mane as they dashed through, following as closely as they could to his child and her mother. But darkness came over their senses as he, and Andikan, tumbled upon the shadowed, earthy ground. His eyes opened to find various creatures from Helovia moving away from him. Trying to stand, his breath was ragged, eyes frantically searching for his child. He’d be damned if he managed to be a father, and lose the child mere weeks after her birth.

He would fight for revenge, if she didn’t make it.

Finally, Sunjata stood on shaky legs, wings originally splayed had begun to tighten against his body as he looked around again, this time hardly missing the sharp hissing sound from Andikan. He had tumbled a bit further, a small tuft of black hair wrapped around a few sharp teeth, and his slit eyes glared back at Jata with a rage that Jata couldn’t understand – nor could he feel very much either. “Rinne?” He whispered into nothingness, shakily walking over to Andikan while searching for the familiar blue body of his daughter.

"Talk."

Akeli
Oh, little sparrow. You just can’t seem to stay out of trouble. Maybe it finds you, but maybe you just attract it.

The last thing Akeli remembers, the thing to follow the death, the blood, the screams, the devastation, is Ktulu promising her that they’ll be reunited. And then the woman is so rude as to PUSH HER into the thing that is eating. everyone. She feels the weight of the portal, flaps her wings desperately, feels through the itch and raw wounded skin new wings emerge (ouch ouch ouch ouch!!), and she isn’t sure if she’s flying or sinking or hurdling down the esophagus of some horrible monster, and tears spring to her honey eyes, and as much as she loves Tootaloo and how she’s pretty much the Constrictor’s adopted daughter and Eytan is her brother, she wants her own mother. Her mother would never have fed her to something.

As she flutters and collapses and tumbles towards the belly of the beast, she reaches out with her mind, nudging the small presence in the back of her consciousness, and if she were old enough to swear, she probably would have cursed it out loud - that little furry bastard was still asleep. Asleep! Can you believe that? They’re about two minutes from being digested, and he is too concerned with cuddling the amulet and dreaming sweet dreams of eating sleek fish and scurrying lizards that he has no idea they are hurdling towards their demise.

But then they hit grass, and no sooner are four little hooves upon the ground than she starts a dead sprint into the trees, body shaking, wings new and old flapping frantically at her sides as she crashes through the underbrush. The brambles reach to meet her, scratching at her heaving sides, and low-hanging branches lash at her young face. Nope, nope, nope. Running away from the hole, seemingly unscathed, was well enough,  until something moves, and it sounds big. The world is dark, and she is little, and not at all fierce, so she skids to a halt, and around her are rumblings, glowing eyes peering, and she is aware that she is being hunted. Another rustle, a snarl, and all she can imagine is a wolf, or a tiger, or a big nasty lizard with way too many teeth.

’Lizard?!’ And, he’s awake. As Akeli turns tail and begins her unceremonious return, galloping back to where she thinks she came from, and all she can feel is irritation screaming through her psyche from him because she didn’t let the small kitten fox Gremlin who, up until this point, had been sound asleep, go and hunt at an all-you-can-eat-for-the-rest-of-your-life buffet. Her bond is so new, so fresh, that she is hardly able to notice how a haze hangs between her and Grim, and all she catches are sharp emotions flashing through the murky haze and separation. “Shut up,” the tiny filly hisses, “We don’t have time to eat. You were almost a snack!”

More irritation is muttered through their bond, but she didn’t care. Soon forms come into shape, and she bursts through the trees, and her happiness fought against his petulance, and next thing she knows she finds herself throwing her tiny body desperately into Ktulu’s chest, rubbing a cheek against her. A twitching nose is pressed through a tiny hole chewed in his basket, and it twitches as Grim tries to smell Ktulu’s companion. It disappears again, and the sound of chewing breaks through, but it is easy enough to ignore as the trio and their companions begin to move again.

So much is happening, and it is exhausting. But they cannot stop, for resting horses are sitting ducks in this new violent land, and they literally just escaped being decimated in violent light, so the filly pushes through, knowing that one brush with death a day is more than plenty. She follows Ktulu diligently, keeping up, making sure to help and encourage the younger filly, if needed. Her and Grim’s bond had become little more than a dull throb in the back of her head, only flaring up in times of heightened emotion. (’OUT., he had been demanding, but he would wander off and probably be eaten and he was much too cute to be gobbled up, so she had been ignoring him and left his basket firmly shut.)

When they come upon a stallion, she shuffles her wings happily and smiles, but otherwise stands back and watches their reunion. To not say hello to Ktulu’s friend would be rude (it’s also rude to feed children to a big black hole, but we’re trying to move past this), so she introduces herself quietly, but otherwise remains silent, and listens intently as the adults talk. All that matters right now is that they are all reunited and safe.

Ha. Safe.

It cares little for what Kisamoa did to bring them here; it cares only about what it has been given.

It is, also, vaguely concerned about how little it is allowed to take. Forces it has nothing against guard things welded to their souls, and it is denied the ability to strip them of everything but their flesh. The skies cry with its frustration, the thunder with its rage, but there is nothing it can do.

Gods of another realm, who are not Gods here but thieves and murderers, have given their love and their life to protect those tumbling through the wormhole.

The Rift hisses and rolls and roils, taking what scraps it is offered.

It is dark.

You do not know how long it has been, only that as your mother pushed you through, despite the fact that you hadn’t wanted to go because your family was not complete, because your Papa was still missing and it was wrong to just leave him, and in the pit of your stomach there was a growing sickness and there must have been within him, too—how could he know any of you were safe if you didn’t wait?—it ate the light from around you, under you. You had cried then, as the world had been ripped apart and living things were wiped away as if everything they were meant nothing. Death is not yet something you understand, but it had been terrifying all the same to see them as they disintegrated to nothing. Ama had told you not to look, but it had been too late as she ushered you through the chaos of the end, even as you tried fruitlessly to fight against her, begging for just a few more minutes.

It is dark—even the stars that have followed you as long as you can remember have vanished, the fear stirring in your heart more poignant since you have been alone, and there is only the memory of what was, and you wish you had listened to her sooner, wish for your Papa and Ama and even your sister, too, just to be alright, even if you are not with them, if it means you have to stay in this forever (as awfully long of a time that forever is).

It was so dark.

This new world comes as blinding light, as sounds bleeding one into the next, becoming a crescendo of only noise. The world comes as confusion, as a blessing because it means you are done with that cloying darkness, done with the thoughts, the worry, of never having another tomorrow; done with being alone as your eyes adjust and there are others, just as lost as you, as the sound of your Ama’s voice becomes clear among the ringing in your skull. You clamor to your feet then, jumping towards where you thought you heard it come from—and you would have kept going if it weren’t for the pathetic cry that follows you, the icky that leaks through your bond. “Come on, Trouble,” you turn back to him, eyeing the otter curled pitifully among the curls of smoke. He only looks up to you, too lethargic to even lift his head. Worry flutters in your chest, your brows furrowing as you lay down next to the frail creature, nuzzling the top of his head. “We have to find Ama and Papa, even if you don’t want to, we gotta.”  You do not wait for a response before shoving your nose as gently as you can beneath him, aware of the feverish heat that radiates from him but unsure of what it is, and more importantly unsure of what to do, guiding him onto the ridge of your shoulder blades. “Don’t worry; they’ll know what to do.”

It is Akeli that you find first, her panic mirroring in you as she breaks from the trees, your wide gray eyes watching for any following movement as you wait with baited breath, your muscles tense beneath dark skin. When nothing comes you turn, huffing as you begin to follow her, forgetting the moment Ama and Eytan become visible through the black mists the danger that the both of you could have been in moments before. You rush to her as Akeli had, rubbing against her skin before almost bounding ahead as she begins to move, mindful of the ill pup nestled miserably on your back.

Uncharacteristically you do not ask where you all are going, convinced that Ama is just as concerned for Papa as you are, leaving no questions within your mind to ask. Instead, you try your best to soothe Trouble, thinking about how Eytan could take the three of you on adventures to explore like he had done before, all of the tasty things that he could find to eat when he was feeling better. This thought seems to just make him feel even worse, and you decide to leave food for another time.

It’s both an eternity and the blink of an eye before a familiar shape breaks from the bleakness, blue and splendid and, and—you squeal as you peel from your mother, suddenly forgetting the gloom that hangs, thick and perverse, your heart soaring within your chest as he becomes clearer, the smell of home finally noticeable among the decay.

“PAPA,”

“We found you!” It is a breathy sigh of relief as you reach him, burying your face in the nook of his chest, finding endless comfort within the familiarity of warmth. You linger until you are satisfied that he will not go, finally turning back towards your Ama and sister with an almost triumphant smile, your trembling heart beginning to feel whole again. The shift upon your back pulls your attention once more to the otter, your ears tilting back as you look again to the winged man that lives in the center of your heart hopefully.

“He doesn’t feel good. What’s wrong with him, Papa?”

Ktulu</style>
when the sky turns gray and everything is screaming
i will reach inside just to find my heart is beating
</style>

She came through the portal alone aside from Eytan, but he was the farthest thing from her mind. "Rinne!" The Constrictor shouted her youngest child's name as she clambered to her hooves. "Rinne! Akeli!" Ktulu turned, wide-eyed as she took in the sights around her.  Others poured through the portals, some in groups and some alone, but none of the ones that she saw were who she wanted them to be. It had been a gamble to force them through the portal when she hadn't been sure where it led, and the longer she went without seeing the two girls the more it seemed like that gamble had not paid off.

It seemed like hours, when in reality it was only a few minutes before the two girls were bounding toward her. Air rushed out of her lungs in a sigh of relief as the two of them threw themselves against her. Thank the Gods. In a display that was quite unlike Ktulu, she hugged each child in turn. "Are you okay?" She asked them. "Any injuries?" But they both seemed fine. A little shaken. Confused. Scared... but otherwise fine.

Once assured that her two girls were fit for travel the trio, along with their companions, set off. There was no way for Ktulu to know where they were going, but she knew that they needed to move. She wanted to find someone that she knew and trusted for when the shit really hit the fan because in her experience, things always got worse before they started getting better.

What could be worse than watching her sister die, though?

She looked at the two fillies walking with her and knew exactly what could be worse.

Rinne's shouting and exclamation at finding her Papa did bring a little bit of relief to the dark mare. She may not have known him well -- or at all, really -- but she was fairly certain that he would protect his child. "Bluebird." She said in greeting because she couldn't remember his damn name. Sun-somethingorother.

Whatever.

It was Rinne's announcement that her companion didn't feel good that brought her attention to her own bond. Now that she thought about it, her own bond felt ... strange. She couldn't pinpoint what it was, but the link she shared with Eytan didn't feel the same. She frowned as she stared down at the bear before she finally spoke up. "My bond feels .. different."

These mere scraps are augmented--just barely. But the starving forces here are not above oddments and trifles. They consume as if it is their last meal.

But it is not their last meal. Oh no, this is their first meal in what feels like forever to these magic-emaciated beings. The shadows glow; the sky pours in soggy exultation. This is salvation... for some.

a calm sea never made a skilled sailor
Exhausted and distraught, Sunjata’s head shot up at every movement. His companion remained as hidden as he could be, finding solace in the underbrush while Sunjata felt as though he ran around aimlessly searching for his daughter. In reality, the poor blue bird seemed to walk in circles, uncertain where to go and what to do. Suddenly, a though occurs to him to use the blade that Ampere had given him, allowing him to see someplace else nearby, to see an event that might be happening currently. He was uncertain if it would work here, or not, but he gripped the dagger with his teeth, eyeing the blade. However, before he can utter a single word out, movement catches his icy eyes.

PAPA!

Relief spreads through Sunjata’s chest as his daughter collides with his chest. A smile breaks from his lips and he tucks the blade away for safe keeping before reaching down to nuzzle the blue child gently. His wings spread forward, aiming to wrap around the child’s small body, pulling her closer to him. “My baba.” He coos to her in his native tongue, pulling back just briefly to press his lips gently against her forehead. She moves away from him then, and that’s when Sunjata noticed Ktulu and another pegasus child. His eyes briefly glance over Akeli as he offers her a small dip of his head and a smile, relieved to have found his daughter after all this time of worry.

When his gaze reached Ktulu and her smart remark to him calling him a bluebird, a chuckle escaped his lips. “Bear woman.” He offered in return, his voice thick with the Korofi accent as he winked at her humorously. However, as Rinne speaks of her bond with Trouble, Ktulu also remarks of the bond between her and her bear, and that’s when Sunjata noticed that he couldn’t feel Andikan as well as he had before. He nods slightly, looking down to Rinne. “Mine feels strange too, my child. But I can still feel him. Can you?” He questioned quietly, open for Rinne and Ktulu to respond should they wish. “Maybe they’re sick from the travel like we are?” He questioned, simply thankful the arrogant crocodile happened to make it through the portal in the first place, despite missing a few dark hairs in his mane.

Akeli
The bluebird smiles and she smiles too. And Ktu had been happy to find her, which was so surprising it sent warm fuzzies down Akeli’s spine.

But thats about where the happy feeling left her.

The beautiful necklaces she had been collecting flew towards her throat, and she leapt into the air as the scream was choked out of her. Strangled, long cold fingers around her throat, she tried to force a cough, tried to inhale, tried to shake the constriction from her, but she couldn’t. The smell, like horrific gasses and sharp metal, swirled within her nose. She shook her head desperately, tears welling in her eyes, and the smoke erupts around her face as the amulets finally vanish. She gasps and coughs, falling backwards onto her rear end, blinking away the tears and gulping in fresh air. But it lingers still, in the throbbing around her antlers, and a pitiful cry escapes her. Anxiety swells in her bones, and she wonders if this is what her mother felt as she died beneath that great oak tree, and tears stream freely down her face.

Within his basket, Grim writhes, hissing and spitting, and he erupts through the hole he has been chewing in the side of the basket, squeaking painful as beats of pain erupt through their bond. He leaps towards the ground, ridge of fur standing straight up along his spine. He hisses, curling his body around the girl's ankle, in an uncharacteristic bout of both reassurance and desire to be comforted. She pushes though the discomfort as vines spring from her brow, reaching down to caress the soft fur of her companion.

“It hurts!” she wailed, tears swelling in those honey eyes. "I want to go home!"

Silence falls as the child whimpers, and all four wings shuffle as she embraces herself. This place is terrible. Even though she is one of the lucky ones who has found her loved ones, she just wants to go home.

Mine feels strange too, my child. But I can still feel him. Can you?

You nod somewhat absent mindedly, glancing at the otter from over your shoulder. The fur against your skin is still hot, his discomfort muting your attempts to comfort him through the fledgling bond. There is frustration as no immediate answers are given, only guesses, and you sigh quietly, a fore hoof digging against the dark ground, the worry that had been dismissed so easily among your instinct to find your Ama and Papa swelling in your chest–and not just for your Trouble, but also for Eytan and Andikan and Gremlin. “Can we fix them?” Your head lifts to look at both the Bluebird and the Bear Woman, oblivious to the lack of familiarity, the awkwardness, between the two, all hope and trust, knowing nothing different of the world.

It is then that Akeli falls and you squeak as the movement startles you, your body moving backwards and into your Papa’s warmth once more, your eyes wide as you watch her struggle against nothing (having not seen the smoke, the way the amulets had grasped at her neck so dangerously tightly), flinch as she cries out. “Wh-what’s the matter?” You ask no one in particular, your voice quivering with the fear that has gripped your heart, beating feverishly in your narrow chest, a whimper leaving you as Gremlin emerges from the little basket, writhing in pain with his bonded.

It hurts!’ She cries finally, and you rock in place, ears leaning back against curls of indian ink. ‘I want to go home!

Home.

Your eyes lift to the darkness of the forest that encompasses your family, all of it so sinister, so very strange and different to the world all of you had known. You hadn’t thought about it before, too preoccupied with Trouble and finding your parents and sister, but you suppose you had known in the shadow of your heart that there is no home to return to. That the places you had known are so far out of reach now that you doubt you will ever see any of it again, that this–whatever this place truly is–is all that is left. Why else would you all be here?

It hurts.

You make no effort to hide the tears that have lined your eyes at the way your heart aches as you step forwards, reaching towards the bridge of the older girl’s nose hesitantly in an attempt to offer comfort (for the both of you) where little can be found.
