Aurelia
She clutched herself with her wings, her warm body slick from the terrential downpour. She wasn’t right. Filtered through the incessant falling rain, her face looked like a worn and bruised mirage, the skin deeply lined. She’d lost weight and some random tufts of hair from various nicks and tucks. Even her shoulders had the stooped curvature of someone worn. Her pink snout felt irreversibly sunburned, an unfortunate gift from Tallsun's blistering heat. She was too many mysteries. Too much walled-up history. There was a fury in her features, visible even through the rain. A new darkness in her eyes.

The mare jerked sideways and pressed her moist face to a nearby tree, moving her head up and down it's soggy trunk scratching deep, raking the skin, digging hard into the bark. Some vast emptiness seemed to drive her on, a craving for warmth and reassurance. And still, there was the fatigue of defeat weighing heavily on her porcelain features.

Was it lack of hope? Anger? Defeat? Loneliness? The mare seemed lost, but not in a helpless, kidnapped-princess sort of way, but angrily. Tired of not succeeding, tired of doing nothing, tired of simply being. And so maybe then, gradually at first, Aurelia became attuned to a curious new odor in the air. A foul tartness, like spoiled milk. The smell had been there all along, in the rain and the trees, but now it seemed to condense into something solid. Something so tangible it was as if she could open her dainty jaw and clamp down onto it with her aged teeth.

The rain danced between the leaves before smacking the mare, but it didn't feel like rain to the girl. It felt like tar, thick and dark and suffocating. Just like her mind. Lightning began flickering through the sky, accompanied by the loud boom of thunder.

She lived in a puzzle world, where the most ordain objects seemed fiercely alive with their own sorrows and desires. It had always seemed so implausible that the world could be indifferent to its own existence. The mare couldn’t help believing in some fundamental governing principle beneath things. And of course, the Rift solidified this belief. With shifting shadows and cackling trees, everything bent and twisted with life. It would seem unrealistic to expect things to be alive when there is no pulse to feel or guts to spill, but she was certain if she broke a branch of the very tree next to her, it would silently cry out in pain and agony, just as anything with a pulse would.

She was here, in flesh and blood, watching everything grow slick from the rain. The question now wasn't would anyone join her, it was who.

His body was still quite battered from his fight with Ricochet. The burns on his forelegs and belly itched and hurt constantly. the price of healing and moving around. As the skin stretched and flexed over muscle it ripped and flaked away. Leaving open sores that oozed blood. He did his best to keep herbal mixtures slathered all over them, but the rain was constantly washing it off. Plus, how the heck was he supposed to reach his belly? To make matter worse his side still flared with pain with each breath. He had to take it easy or risk infurating the internal injury. Ruwin did not like to take it easy. He continued to push through te pain like a stubborn brute. He was even dumb enough to climb the summit, seeking the cool waters of the lake to soak his burns in.

The Watcher had been recovering from his climb (shh no one has to know), when a familiar scent touched his nose. It wafted through the rain, teasing his nostrils and causing his head to raise ears swiveling forward atop his head. Aurelia? Ignoring how his body continued to protest his careless treatment of it, the stallion followed the scent.

He hardly recognized the fiery mare when she came into view. Thin, burnt, and haggard by life she was a far cry from the pregnant feisty woman he had met previously. An air of angry hung around her like a black storm cloud. Something within her had changed, her eyes were no longer that of the mare he had met before. He moved slowly towards her. Well aware of the fire she was capable of summoning. Though he wondered if it would be difficult to bring that fire to life in such wet weather. He was not interested in testing that, having had enough of fire and magma for a while.

Coming to stand parallel with her, though still keeping his distance should she lash out he lowered his head. He surveyed her with a sideways glance. His icy blue eyes aiming to catch her gaze as he spoke. "Aurelia?" A simple word, but full of so much. His eyes expressed the same question. Where had she been, what had happened to her? Where was her child. This last one he bit back. She was already frail enough, appearing haunted by something. He knew not what it was, but the mention of her child could easily tip her over the edge. instead he opted not to say anything. Waiting until she acknowledged his presence before going further.

Had it not been for the storm that brewed violently above them, her snout would've caught the scent of blood. The metallic substance that tried to clot as it oozed out of an injury constantly reopened with each stride as muscles flex, expanding outwards and stretching skin, ripping open scabs and forming scars. Though his wounds bled blood like the tears of a lover foresaken, she was unaware. The sounds of his hooves shuffling closer went unheard. The only sound ricochetting around her spiraling mind was the sound of the rains pounding on every part of her body. Her back. Her Wings. Her snout. Her ass. Her ears which are twisted backwards, blocking the cool wetness from entering them.

Some things she would remember clearly. Other things she would remember only as shadows, or not at all. It was a matter of adhesion. What stuck and what didn’t. For instance, she could recount with precision that a few days ago she had been laying inert in the sun, half dozing, half daydreaming and that the days following were large and empty. Bursts of blue and grey blurring out the details of the sky as rain came and went. And with it came the dying scent of winter and spring. From what she remembered, she knew the mornings were always better. Dew and sun showers played with bodies of waters and blades of grass then. It was when she hadn't had the chance to think deeply about everything, which would inevitably thrust her deeper into the spiral she often encountered.

She did not move as he uttered her name. She did not even offer him a glance. Within her jaw, her tongue moved in sync with her lips and her breath to create a soft cluck, cluck, cluck sound. For horses, the sound was only ever taken in one way: onwards. After a moment of silence, she began to stir. Her tail slapped back and forth, its wet strands swinging behind her ass like whips. She began moving forwards, her pace steady and even. Perhaps the clucking was her way of saying she was leaving, or perhaps it was some strange sort of invitation for him to join her onwards. Or even, perhaps the sound just felt natural to her and should not be thought about too deeply. Afterall, trying to understand her would never work. Aurelia was the most complex being around. She was a riddle that no one would ever be able to solve. She had her secrests. And they were everywhere—land mines beneath the soil, snares atop the plush grass, arrows falling from the sky. He would be ambushed from all directions should he attempt to understand her. "Curiosity killed the cat." Her voice left her lips lightly, a feminine drawl adding a sort of sing-song quality to it that contradicted the way she looked and the way she felt and the way she acted. Her voice was the only thing that seemed normal about her right now.

In the blink of an eye she halted abruptly, spinning around to face the lad, curious to see what he had to say, her eyes fluttering from one patch of blood to another. "Striking as ever," she offered sarcastically, eying the various injuries that dotted his body.

if asked whether or not he cared to understand all that was Aurelia, he'd say no. He already understood enough. Understood that she was a multi layered mare with different levels and facets. He need not understand every aspect of her or know her past. He didn't care about past but present anyways. How could one truly understand someone anyways? He knew her so little to begin with. The way she treated him, the genuine unrestrained personality, was what held her in a more positive light in his eyes. She did not fake, or pretend. She was purely herself. Unpredictable, unapologetic, genuine in the fact that she was indeed not alright or perfectly there.

He didn't have to go through the trouble of trying to figure out her intentions or the real creature that lay beneath. Because it was always on display whenever he was around her. Perhaps not every side of her personality was seen, but each one shown to him was just as much Aurelia as the last. She was a curious creature and his mind did naturally seek to understand her, but at the same time it did not feel frustration when he didn't. Because that was simply her and he had so little experience in the ways of this mare.

So when she clucked he merely walked after her, remaining at the same distance. For she was on a different part of who she was today, a darker more unhinged side. "Luckily I am not a cat." He said, his tone as unreadable as ever. Curiosity was healthy, when caution was also used alongside it. It was why he remained out of her reach, a respectful distance. For he had not seen this side of Aurelia, though the other side he knew had charged him while on fire during their previous encounter. Needless to say he wasn't going to let this girl do the same. Somehow he knew that if she did she wouldn't stop and apologize.

When she whirled around to face him, he stopped, face and placid as ever. "You've not faired much better yourself." he replied, never one to lie. She looked terrible. Haggard and travel worn. Course, he didn't look all that pretty either so he took no offense. Though had he ever really been offended by anyone? "Looks like the Rift has enjoyed chewing on the both of us." He hoped that they gave it indigestion for all of the trouble he had to go through. Aurelia certainly looked like she had been through a lot as well. He still did not ask about her daughter as he tested the waters to see how far Aurelia had fallen into this dark state.

Aurelia
She tends to be silent a moment too long during fluid bantering and then say too much when less should be said. She listens to the wailing of rain and distant thunder. There’s the trees, and the animals, the clouded sky, the lake dug up from the depths of the ground—a serene place tainted by the lulling voice of sirens, the Rift's allée of pine trees whose shadows intermingle with the vena lilies on the surface of that lake and the rain, and the distorted mirror-image of everything above it.

She has this sensation that her hooves and body don’t belong to her at all, that something else besides her brain and muscles is moving her body parts, something bigger and stronger than herself, an invisible puppetmaster over whom she has no control. She feels as though it’s this same puppetmaster that now forces her to lower her head slightly, her eyes narrowing to small slits, and her ears to flatten backwards wholy, a warning glance, unappreciating of his comment about how she has faired (despite knowing what he says is very true). She had been so free and open with him in their last encounter, but this version of herself would never allow that.

It is possible that he would chalk Aurelia's spark and intrigue from their last meeting to pregnancy hormones, but in truth she wasn't that way because of pregnancy hormones.. she's just genuinely insane.

This world was twisted and backwards and confusing and was in no way a place horses should be living, but alas, they were all here and they had no true intent to leave. This land clearly did not want them. The balls of hope, the violent fights that forced hope onto others that didn't want it, the constant struggle to stay alive, the deadly animals and plants, the lack of herds or bands, everything. "Fuck the Rift," was all she could say.

Once more, she spun away from him and began walking directly into the siren-infested waters. She was not worried about the sirens, why would they want a broodmare who's only passion was destruction? She cackles as she thinks quietly to herself, the water lapping at her flank when her wings unfurl, delving into the cool liquid. The rain and the water have tried their best to clean her body, but the scars and wear-and-tear cannot be removed with a simple bath.

"So," she begins, her head twisting backwards to look at him. "Who kicked your ass?" A lopsided smirk crawls onto her lips, finding humor in his bloody body. It wasn't just a fight, but it insteaed seemed like annhiliation. Aurelia was chaos and destruction- the amount of fights she has picked was impressive. She knew what defeat looked like- she'd experienced it numerous times. He stunk of it.

She was fire. Explosive destruction that decimated everything in its wake. He, a massive river of fathomless depths. Calm, deceptively so. Upon his surface he appeared to be nothing more than a lazy, slow moving river. Constant, untouchable. It was only those that were foolish enough to venture into his presence, to step into the water, that knew of the true terror of a deep river. For though calm and serene on the surface, the waters moved swiftly beneath. Dark, relentless, unforgiven as it sucks you below the surface. Swallowing you within its depths where you would never return. She was fire, he water.

Would those flames be able to dry up the river as it sought to exit beside it? Or would they find a strange balance like they had before. He did not seek to temper her heat, to tame the flames that burned within her. For her beauty was not in a fire within a hearth, but a raging forest fire that burned out of control. All the while the river remained, continually flowing as the world burned around it. Just as he did not desire her to attempt to dam him, to redirect his flow, he would not try to put out her flames.

He watched this new Aurelia as she gave him a displeased look. The warning was all too clear, still he did not flinch or shy away. He had plenty of room to react if she did attack. He didn't draw closer or speak. Didn't seek to defend himself. He was an honest creature. He would not say what he did not mean. She looked like crap, he couldn't deny that. Though even dying embers held a certain beauty about them.

Ice blue eyes watched her, waited for her to speak or attack. But she merely turned and walked off. Most certainly a different side of the mare. She reacted and behaved entirely different. She was more closed off, in a way. Like a container that was building pressure before it exploded. He would continue to give her a wide birth. He had no intention of being caught up in that explosion when it happened. Her words drifted back to him and he smirked. Letting out a heavy breath.

He could lie, put up airs or act tough. But he didn't. She had pegged him. Had he truly been so easy to read? That certainly did not happen often. Though he took little pleasure in admitting that he was indeed beaten, he felt a certain level of comfort around the mare that so many would be thrown off balance by. "A cocky native who summons magma." He said as he came to stand at the edge of the lake. Far off to her right. He watched her out of the side of his vision as he looked out over the waters. "If he survives his wounds, he won't win again."

Odd, hearing the normally placid man speaking of settling a score with another. His encounter with Rico had lit a fire of his own within the stallion. He had never been allowed to lose before, as such it did not sit well with him. The dark colored stallion would not be allowed to enjoy his victory for long. The time would come when they'd fight again. Ruwin had no intention of losing the next time they met. Not after he gained the power he sought. "And what of you?" He asked, still giving her a sideways glance. "What worked you over?" And where is your child?

Aurelia

Gone were the early-evening shenanigans. Gone was the joy of simple fun. Gone was her first love, her first children, her first upper tier position, her companion. And it was only as she stood in the deep-blue lake with the rain tickling its way over her feathers and fur and flesh and soul that she dropped a heavy feeling from her shoulders. There, she began to feel some actual lightness, which made her want to leap forward and splish and splash, grab the stallion who vaguely resembled every broken memory of her past and dive deeper into the water, all of which would allow mere minutes of joy; unadulterated fucking bliss. She hadn't had that in a while.

However, she didn't do that. Instead, as he describes the magma-horse, she simply watches him, her lids blinking now and then, but her eyes never moving. And eventually, he asks a question that seems more loaded the more she thinks about it. She snorts softly, a sound nearly as loaded as his question. "You mean," she begins, turning towards him. "What didn't work me over?"

Having noted his distant position, she wonders silently if he is so unsure of her that he feels unsafe. Multitudes of horses have cowered away from her in moments like these, but his distant position didn't seem cowardly as much as cautious. Curious as to what he would do with her, to her, she begins slinking forward, a mangled, golden, shattered illusion; a temptress in the rain. She had the kind of eyes that predisposed you to supporting her every endeavor, the eyes of a charmer, glinting even through the rain.

She hated listening to others stumble on their words nervously or try to phrase things in the vaguest possible way so they wouldn’t sound dumb, and she hated how it was all just a game of trying to figure out what the other wanted to hear and then saying it. She hated that others actually cared about how they sounded, if they were making a good impression, if a friendship (despite how forced it was) had bloomed, how they all tried so hard to be remembered by everyone. She'd been like this once herself but oh how quickly it had completely drained her. She didn't waste time making any one specific sort of impression, but rather just decided if they like me, they like me. if they don't... sucks. He seemed similar in this way, but a more reserved kind. He wasn't abrasive and vulgar and brutal like she was, and in some strange sort of way she thought of him as somewhat gentle. He didn't speak just to speak. He didn't do things to be more well-liked. He just was. She liked it.

As she continued lingering closer and closer to him, her ears finally flicked forwards. Immedietely, and unsurprisingly, the simple act of pricking her ears forward lightened her harsh features and made her more approachable and seemingly less volatile. However, she was still venemous, a beast under the guise of gold and temptation. "Why stand so far from me?" She questioned in an innocently despicable way. "Hmmm, scared?" She smirked now, fully aware that there was no true chance he was afraid of her, but curious as to what he would say regardless.

Like flame she was constantly shifting. Swaying and moving, filled with spontaneous crackles. She grew and shrank, smoldered, smoked. Roared! Unpredictable, but constant in one thing. She was dangerous. He did not comment when she spoke. Merely giving a nod to show that he had heard and acknowledged her words. What more was to be said? He could make some sort of smart remark, but why waste the breath? He didn't much feel like jabbing at her for being beaten down by the world. If she inquired more into his thoughts, he would answer. Never one to truly try and hide anything. It wasn't his fault you never asked.

The ever shifting fire moved. She took notice of his distance and was soon closing the gap. He watched her with an ever calm expression. Ever watchful. She appeared innocent, but looks were so deceiving. She was a picture of an angel. Worn down and fallen, but still beautiful. But her angelic being stopped at the skin. She was a volatile being. Though somehow he didn't feel unsure. Yes, she was dangerous in every shape and form. But she was an honest danger in many ways. She was her. Aurelia. Pure and simple. For this he felt a degree of comfort. Not trust. For he never truly trusted another so easily. But he was not so unsettled by her that he felt the need to back off. Course he had never been the kind to back down. It was why he was so badly hurt in the first place.

He just watched her come closer, his head turning to give her his full attention. Her eyes were alluring, tempting. He knew many would have fallen for this. But he remained unmoved. K'yarie had trained him well against the advances of a woman. She came ever closer. He remained, an unshaken statue. Though his regard for her was not cold. He was not calloused as she approached. Though many would easily overlook the subtle light in his eyes. He was seeing her not as an object to be won, or a thing to be feared. Caution, curiosity, and a spark of acceptance for who she was. It was rather amusing, how she was testing him. Baiting him to see if he would step back or try to take advantage.

Then she spoke. And a ghost of a smile touched his lips. He did not reply immediately. he never did. Always one toe ponder what another said for a moment before speaking. Not because he was fretting about what would most impress the other. But because he wished to analyze the words and formulate his own, honest answer. Purely flavored with his character. "Did you desire to have another so close, until now?" He started, answering her question with a question of his own. Her mood had said otherwise. "You are not the kind to approach without caution, Aurelia." He let her name rolled off of his tongue. "You shift and change like a forest fire, with the heat and fury to match. One does not have to fear the fire to know to respect a being such as yourself. To know to give you space when you need it, and closeness when you desire."

His gaze had drifted to the waters once more, before returning to meet her's. If she attacked him now he would be ready to react. Though now her fire would be a pesky thing to face if the rain did not prove to damper it and its heat. Water streamed down his body, flowing over muscle and flesh before mixing with the tinges of blood that leaked from reopened wounds. He was still battered from his own fight and truly hoped that she wouldn't ruin their reunion with an explosion of hostility.

Aurelia

She looked at the wooded, quick-sloping monstrosity beyond the lake as he told her who he thought she was, what he'd seen in their brief (yet unbelievably private) meetings. The ground was thick with soggy branches, decaying pine needles, and brambly green bushes. There are paths covering the land like one large spider web. The paths twirl in and out of groups of pine trees that sprout tall and thin, their stubbly needles providing a lace of shade from another unbearable day, but they stood in the rain, embracing all that the Rift threw at them. She looked for signs of any 'normal' seasons (like how things wer back in Helovia) approaching, instead of simply wet, dry, or freezing, but none of the non-evergreens showed hints of an approaching fall, spring, summer, or winter: Their still-green leaves were only drooping now due to the heavy and seemingly constant rain. The rain fell in a furious torrent, like the gods (if there were any) were mad and wanted to flood all life out, something that she had thought the Rift was trying to do since the moment she stepped onto the sentient ground. Day after night, night after day, it rained. It poured. The skies never stopped weeping. It poured so hard that she couldn’t see ten feet in front of her at times, so that the lakes swelled up and lapped against the trees, swallowing half of the Rift in water. They all walked around in a perpetual state of wetness. Everything tasted of rainwater and mildew and dampness. Not one thing in this dreaded world was dry today. It was impossible.

In this world, where the rain was more of a danger than anything else, everything felt wrong. The sun was always too hot or nonexistent. The ground either burned or flooded or froze. The sky remained perpetually cloudy when all she wanted was a drop of sunlight. On the flip side, when she wanted a break from the heat, there was not a single cloud in the sky. Everything about this land worked in extremes. Where there should be just a simple breeze was a tornado, a rainshower escalates into a tsunami, a sprinkling of snow forms an avalanche. In this world where everything is so unequivocatly fucked up, he was a fresh of breath air. She did not know him well enough to love him, hardly enough to even like him. It still felt good though. In many ways it also felt right.

He doesn't answer her question, but instead forms another. She stops moving towards him, standing a short ways away from him. If he stretched his mouth outwards, her could bite the soft skin between her nostrils. She could do the same. She listened calmly as her spoke of her, her eyes dancing from the ground to his bloody body to the trees to the rain to his eyes. She ignores the bulk of what he says, aknowledging it fully, but not responding to it. After he finishes, she waits a moment before speaking. "And what is it I desire?"

If he thought he knew her, let him guess what she seeks. He'd been mostly right about everything he had said, but these were just observations that many make about her. Fire and fury. Passion and pride. Love and loss. Unpredicatbility and unapologetic. These were her labels, and he'd focused on the first one- fire and fury. It was the most accurate, true, but there were so many layers to her soul that one assumption of her was never fully correct. She could not be condensed into one- not even two or three, labels.

"What is it," she begins curiously, "you desire?" At this point, she had the nagging feeling he knew more about her than she did him. She would like to think she could throw eloquent words together to describe him like he did her, but she really couldn't. From what she'd seen, he was inexplainable. He was just as much of a puzzle as she was. They were intricate, complex, fomidable beings with walls built around their minds and souls, their hearts clad with stone, their lives a game of cat and mouse. Alas, despite their complexities, they were here, alive and breathing and speaking and living.

Silence fell between them. They were close now, so very close. But inwardly they were both still so very distant. They held a general fondness for one another. Two beings who were at least willing to exist in the same space without being forced by circumstance. Though neither could claim any sort of feeling beyond this comfortableness It was very possible that they could grow to become…

friends.

He never thought of falling in love. Even now the thought did not cross his mind. Then again, he did not think about forming bonds or friendships to begin with. Things like that tended to just happen. Like when he first encounter Vynter. He had not intended to give the lad one of his machines when they first laid eyes on one another. But something about the boy’s fascination with them had spurred him to do so. Nor had he imagined that he would ever encounter him again, let alone be healed by the boy when he was injured from his fight. Somehow they were forming a friendship. he had to admit he was becoming fond of the boy, though he certainly had his faults.

His meeting with Aurelia had also been rather strange, unwanted and unpredictable. He had no intention of speaking with her and as a result she had charged him while ablaze. Then they set out together to find water and he ultimately ended up guarding her while she gave birth. It was such an absurd encounter that even he wasn’t quite sure it really happened.

But here she was, standing before him. So it had to have. Funny how a creature who desired solitude ended up meeting so many people. It was as if someone was determined to push him out of his comfort zone, and have him meet everyone within the rift.

Rain trickled down his neck, pooling at his shoulders before spilling over to stream down his legs. It was mildly annoying how wet everything was, but like with the ghost that continued to try and pester him, he ignored it. Instead he focused on Aurelia and the loaded questions she shot at him. He somehow found her question amusing and a chuckle finally escaped his normally reserved lips. It was a rich, robust sound that seemed to wrap those around him in its pleasantness.

“Desires change constantly. What we desire one day or year can change in the next.” He mused, his gaze turning towards her. Their noses were even closer now, he could feel the warmth of her breath as it caressed his muzzle. “I can’t claim to know what you desire and it would be foolish of me to try. I do not know enough about you. I have only seen two pieces that make up the puzzle that forms who you are.” He stated, falling silent as he contemplates her other question.

His face turned back to the lake. “As for me. It changes as well. Surviving, increasing my magical strength, to gaining more knowledge.” He looked up at the sky, adding under his breath. “To simply being dry.’’ He spoke louder. “Currently I wish to gain power to increase my defensive capabilities. After I accomplish that, I will see what I require next in order to become stronger and thrive within this world.” It was a loose plan of the most basic shape.

But it allowed him a lot of wiggle room and adaptability should he encounter a new hurdle in life. He knew he wanted to increase his magical arsenal and was taking steps to doing this. This was enough of a path for him. A river was patient in its ways as it carved its route through the land. If things rose up in its way it either slowly wore them down, or found another way to continue on its path. He flowed through life in much of the same way. "How is your daughter fairing?" He finally asked, unsure if she even knew where she was at this point. Something told him that she hadn't been in the state of mind to keep track of where she was.
