Once upon a time, in a world far far away, there lived a benevolent god, or set of gods, depending on your metaphysical view. In that world, things were fair and balanced, and while there was sometimes evil, all who dwelled within were secure in the knowledge that for every harm, there was an offset of good.

But that is not this world. For in this world balance is simply a word. A concept for bedtime stories and consolations on a sickbed.

This would is rife with brutality and decay, and best of all, madness

Tola had been hibernating. Well, not hibernating. Or maybe it was, in a technical sense. Normal animals typically hibernated in the winter to conserve their strength until summer. Tola on the other hand had simply gone without eating for so long that her body lacked the energy to keep her moving, even if it still had the power to keep her alive. But then, perhaps through osmosis or some altruistic worms who had slithered into her mouth, she woke up.

"Ahhhhh-" The male mare yawned, heaving her pale emaciated frame from her bed of dried leaves and rotting corpses. Twigs and dirt hung in clumps in the tattered balls of her thinning mane, and between hair and rifraf there sat a circlet of twigs, almost like a crown. "Unchilly." The hag muttered to herself through yellowing teeth. Her one good eye bulged beneath its vale of cataracts, and as she blinked her stupidly long eyelashes, the Rift slowly came back into view.

"Now then popits-" She croaked, addressing what appeared to be an empty forest. "Come and give 'ol Tola a kiss-" The word slithered from her lips as her one-eye rolled in its socket. "Comm'in give me a proper good morning." For one so old and badly emaciated, her voice had a novel sing-song quality of it, reminiscent of a witch in a fairytale.

And so, Tola waited for the Rift to do its worst.

There’s a soft breeze that reaches out for you, raking over your body with a chill that would be enough to send shivers down your spine. The world around seems to still, nearly slowing with the sudden cold among the heat of Drench, but before long it vanishes as though it was never there. In the span of a few seconds, the Rift is pleased, taking part of your magic with it in it’s wake.

Numb as her old body is to the sensations of the world, Tola appears to feel the arrival of the Rift in the very marrow of her skull. Her dry lips peel back revealing yellow teeth and gums that ooze with bacteria. A foul stench wafts as she opens her mouth and releases a wet raspy sound.
"There ya'r," The raspiness of her exhalation forms into words, but only barely. "Even rocks take sustenance when they can, so they do." She continued, eye lashes blinking with languid slowness over her one 'good' eye.

As an icy feeling began to migrate down her spine, Tola cocked her head to one side as if listening. Her ears, clogged with tangled bits of hair, swivelled and then seemed to lock onto something. Part of her magic was leeched from her body and then the coldness just withdrew. Tola's one cataract-covered and swollen eye suddenly bulged in its socket. "EHH???" She bleeted, spinning in a circle as fast as her aged bones would allow. Silently and stiffly, she allowed a few seconds to pass.

The Rift did not return.

"Yar have gotten fat on the promises of your chattle!!" She cawed accusingly as a hoard of small glowing spiders began to traipse down the center of her face, having emerged from somewhere in her forelock.

What Arioch needed was to find his brother.

It only made sense that because Ari had been birthed into this world via the portal, that Alastor would have been similarly birthed. Only when Ari had looked around, blinking stupidly in a body that was all too mortal, the only companions he saw were a hellhound and wolf - both which fled instantly.

"Alastor!" Ari shouted, his lips peeling all the way back to allow his jaw to unhinge and force even more sound out of his mouth. The demon paused, his ears swivelling to try and catch the sound of his demonic kin's reply, but the only sound which he heard was the ramblings of a mare who seemed to be only inches away from death herself.

Yar have gotten fat on the promises of your chattle!!

In no mood for games or the tirades of a mad old woman, Ari merely stared at the pale figure, his nearly white green gaze scanning over her with only the mildest of interest. She appeared so close to death that for a moment Arioch reasoned that if he stuck close enough by her, she might keel over and he could sneak back into hell. Surely that's where she was headed after all. But no ... he could not leave this place without his brother.

And so his search continued.

ARIOCH

THERE'S A FEELING I GET, WHEN I LOOK TO THE WEST, AND MY SPIRIT IS CRYING FOR LEAVING.
IN MY THOUGHTS I HAVE SEEN RINGS OF SMOKE THROUGH THE TREES, AND THE VOICES OF THOSE WHO STANDING LOOKING.

Despite Tola's near-blindness and her constantly catatonic state, the aged mare's nostrils suddenly flared, and her incredibly hairy ears flickered and turned towards where the demon was passing by.

Her one good eye bulged in its hollow socket as she forced him to be seen through her own personal murky haze. Her immortal soul stirred within herself, as if recognizing something in him. His body was sleek as midnight, only differentiated with a multitude of different sheens of black. "The devil," Tola whispered, through lips which had grown tighter and tighter the longer the demonic man stayed within her vision. "-is not as black as he is painted." These words fell to the ears of no one at all, save for the spiders that crawled amiably around the hollows of Tola's face.
