“Oh, little wings…” The famished blue foal yawned wearily as she silently addressed the wings fluttering against her breast.

All the while, she lugged one reluctant sooty limb forward, and then the next, and then the next, dragging each leaden hoof through the soft, soggy soil until she had reached the western fringe of the humongous forest. “I give up now.” A search spanning days, weeks – a whole entire eternity – had found no trace of her beloved twin, and she felt so weary and achy now, that even the heat building behind her forlorn gaze could find no strength to purge the well of tears.

“Mama!”

Apart from the steady patter of falling rain around her, everything seemed quiet.

“Da!”

In her mind, as the soft ring of her voice fizzled out, a sequence of images flashed by – memories – that though not forgotten, had been pushed by fresh worries into the farthest corners of her conscience. First, she was nestled on the beach, their home, and Indra was pressed in close against her. There were faces gazing down, one white and one blue; lavender eyes set upon one and a pair of striking sapphire, each filled with immeasurable warmth and love - they were Ma and Da.

Entranced, and lost within her mother’s stare, she found another scene unfolding; this time a horribly morbid sight which provoked her feeble heart to race and her skin to shake in fear; bodies were slicing hither and thither through the air, others streaking across the land, and they were all swarming around the massive monster. Before her eyes widening eyes, the familiar forms of both parents exploded in a flash of black and teal, and then were gone.

“They’re gone…” she murmured, inundated by a wave of boiling hot grief. “Wings, they’re all gone?” It was then that the reality of her predicament, the loneliness and hunger, for the first time actually sank in. Her family were all gone, “They poofed!” Eira didn’t understand exactly what that meant, for she was young, innocent and in many ways deprived. Hopelessness poured through her veins and dry sobs began to resonate through her core. “What do I do now?” tiny, feathery voice begged through the air, velveteen maw screwed up with disdain.

So the small blue hybrid began to run – to gallop – with every inch of might left in her, because she wanted to go home. She wanted the Rift adventure to be over.

@Noella - the rift gave her extra wings (mutation), that is who she talks to.
