Rainbows in Rain Storms

So his last adventure out hadn’t been…brilliant. The colt had had to give an explanation somehow, of how he managed to come home smelling of smoke. How he’d nearly caught the forest on fire...How he'd burned his shoulder…He didn’t tell them about what grabbed his hoof. They might not have let him out again if they knew he’d let that happen. So when he’d finally convinced them he could go out again, he decided he best explore the beach this time instead of the forest. Maybe it had its monsters too, but he could at least see them.

It would have been great. The colt was finding he loved the sea, it wised expanse and open air feeling. But of course, it was raining again. Rain pounded the colt’s head and hardened the sand so it only served to bog him down. Even the flames at his back hissed and spit in the downpour. He was opening it would let up, he wanted so badly for it to, but no, it rained and rained. The colt was just about to give him, to turn and head back to the forest when in the haze of the beach rose….a rock? A cave? He hurried to it. It didn’t matter what it was. If it offered him protection without making him go back in that forest just yet, he’d take it.

Running, as much as one can run through quick sand, and with the limp from his still sore shoulder, the colt stumbled under the awning of the cave. He shakes he small frame, but he does not shiver like most do in the cold. There were, however small, some comforts of the flame licked feathers on his back. Their warm drafts of air ever wrapping around his spine, warming his small body. Picking his head up, the sea blue eyes finally look around to what he’s found. It is staggering. Glittering rocks and colorful stones wrap and cover the cave. For the moment the colt is dumbfounded to a stop. Perhaps if he had seen the wonders of Helovia’s heart caves, he wouldn’t be so taken aback, but those were gone…

You find comfort here in the depths of Ultima... the ocean surrounds you like a shield. She leans in close as if to cradle you like the mother you no longer remember, dark and womanly and mystifying. It reminds you of a time before there was light or weight or anything but darkness and warmth. A time before you were forced into this strange existence.

Gold ribbons of light sift down through the blue water, moving and rippling as though breathing. It is eerie, but more so soothing, especially since your coat is finally beginning to dry. You've decided to make this your home for a while. You love rain but in this land it never ends. At least down here you don't feel so drenched and cold, and you are safe from the predators and strange beasts that linger in the world above.

Mismatched eyes gaze into the blue abyss, fabricating dreams weaved from the webs of boyish fantasies. You imagine yourself parting the sea, swimming with the fishes without breathing air.

Then the stirring of another yank you back into reality and you pin your ears. You didn't want company. The patter of hooves against stone bring a scowl to your face. Curiosity gets the better of you, though. You can't help but investigate. Quietly you make your way toward the sound, making sure to keep your hoofsteps quiet. You are a shadow, swallowed up in the darkness of the caves. Perhaps someday you will be a great big shadow like your father! For now, you are small and your bravery grows day by day.

You spot him. He is not winged like you. Flames lick at his sides and crest the pair of horns upon his head. You are shadow and rain, but he is light and fire. You cock your head and creep closer. He is so enraptured by the glittering stones that he doesn't see you (as far as you know.)

This is your cave! and he's let himself vulnerable to the fuckery of a bored young colt. You want to show him you're brave!

"RAaaaa!" you shout, small voice made as loud as your small lungs allow. You launch from the shadows and run at the other colt with all the speed your slender, match-stick limbs can muster. You crane your swan's neck like a ram and try to butt your head into his, baby wings flared out from your sides.

and calm your heart,
the dark is still the dark
