"We stand upon the precipice of change. The world fears the inevitable plummet into the abyss. Watch for that moment and when it comes, do not hesitate to leap. It is only when you fall that you learn whether you can fly."
        -- Flemeth, Dragon Age II

He was with her through the portal, she could feel him until she suddenly couldn't. One moment he's there, keeping her protected and the next she's falling. A squeal erupts from her lips, wings that had been folded and holding onto the newly hatched fox instinctively unfurl. Elgar'nan's claws scratch at her back and shoulders before he slips from his perch between her wings, tumbling off on his own. She is too preoccupied trying to slow her descent that she doesn't notice his yelp as he hits the ground, his small form rolling a few times before growing still. Bella hasn't learned to fly just yet so her wings don't work exactly the way she expects them to. Flailing, the girl hits the ground with a thud and a sharp exhale of breath.  The jolt of the impact leaves her feeling like her whole body is ringing. Disoriented, the yearling lays still on the ground of this new place - the little fox a few feet away, breathing and alive but momentarily unconscious. She isn't certain how much time passes before she begins to feel capable of moving again but she is distinctly aware of being alone (at least, as alone as one can get in this strange place).

The girl eases herself back up onto her hooves and winces. For a moment, she focuses on flexing and testing her limbs, stretching her wings a bit before tucking them back against her sides. By the time she truly shifts to look around her, her soft green gaze is met by smoke, mist, dark gnarled trees draped in vines, and odd neon eyes blinking in and out of the shadows. With a more optimistic mindset, it might have the potential to be almost pretty but it is rather hard to be completely optimistic under these particular conditions. Instead of dwelling on the creep factor of this new place, she shifts her attention to the two far more important individuals that should be nearby. "Daddy?" she asks almost pensively, her voice steady despite the tiny seed of fear settling deep in her core. "Daddy, where are you?"

But he doesn't respond and from where she stands, peering into the surrounding darkness, she doesn't see any trace of the Golden Prince. With a small huff of breath, she shifts her attention to the small fox - only now does she realize she cannot sense him the way she could mere moments after he hatched. Bella feels a tendril of panic seep into her thoughts. What if he didn't make it? What if he was killed in the fall? Her knowledge of the bond they share is small enough that she cannot answer those questions. Her anxiety builds, spreading and leaving her panicked as she scans the foreign grounds for the pale form of Elgar'nan.

As she shifts and moves, his pale form soon becomes visible. The slight movement of his sides as his breath enters and leaves his lungs is subtle enough that she doesn't notice it immediately. "ELGAR'NAN!" she shouts without caution, rushing to his side as quickly and carefully as she can. Once beside him, she lowers her nose to his small body. Relief floods her when she finds him warm and still breathing. She nuzzles him softly, pleased to see him gently stir. For now, she can breathe again but she won't know how injured he is until he wakes and her missing father still lingers at the back of her mind.

Requests: Have some fun! She's sort of intended to become a kind of 'witch of the wilds' with a bit of a benevolent twist. Motherly and protective but also somewhat cryptic. Also, elvish influences. But yeah, mutations and stuff are fun.

A single pillar stands alone amid the thick growth that the Portal opens (pushes) into. In this godless, heartless realm of shadows and twisted dreams, a poison has crept up from the earth in its desperation for life.

It glows in the dark, small veins along this dark column. Small, weblike protections spreading along the surface, just waiting for a brush with life or magic or anything to save it from this famine.

Take care where you tread, traveller. For being a savior to this poison isn’t being saved at all.

I have loved the stars too fondly || To be fearful of the night
____________________________________________________________________
It had been unbearable, a heaving symphony climbing to reach its crescendo, before it had culminated into a single drop in an endless bucket. It had ended in silence.

Everything was silent.

The star swept mare trembles, stripped of one of her most utilized senses, and in this new and violent world, she feels trapped and horrified. Ears twist constantly, desperate to catch the smallest whisper, but there is nothing. Silver eyes roll as she tries to watch her back, watch her sides, watch all of the blind spots she now has thanks to her sudden deafness. Something brushes her haunch, and whether it was a fern or death she didn’t know, didn’t care, because she was careening into the darkness, crashing through the underbrush.

She misses the gentle voice calling out into the darkness, turning from a murmer to a desperate yell, and she nearly tramples past the small form begging her companion to move. The starlit skids to a halt, shaking the debris from her coat, still hidden just a bit away within the trees. She certainly didn’t sneak nearby, no, because the amount of noise she had made was probably akin to a rhinoceros thrashing around in a china shop. Ears continue to lean, spin, pivot, but it doesn’t take sound to know that the girl is trying to wake something that may never wake again.

Slowly she emerges, walking carefully on long legs, and blows a gentle nicker to announce her presence. Despite being uninvited, she makes her way to the side of the fox, and drops her own muzzle down to investigate. It is alive. She pulls her head away, smiling at the girl, and takes a step back.

“HE’S ALIVE, IT’S OKAY.” Somehow, yelling was what came naturally. She could feel the force with which her words emerged, and cleared her throat, shifting uneasily. ’Well,’ she thought to herself, ’this is embarrassing’. Softer then, barely above a whisper, she continues. “Sorry, I’ve lost my hearing, I don’t mean to yell. A lot has happened today. I’m sure it’s taken a toll on him, just as it has you.”

She pulls her lantern from its holder and lowers it to the ground between them, allowing its stardust to cast pallid light across their scene. “My name is Ki’irha, I am from Helovia.”

It’s not as though she would be able to hear any response, but perhaps she was better at reading lips than she thought. She would hopefully provide some sense of safety in this world, maybe provide enough comfort for the girl and her bonded to get through this initial shock.

Amidst the ghastly trees, caressed by shadow and an odd purple glow, stands  a dark pillar webbed with veins. It goes unnoticed by the sandy hued yearling for quite some time: her focus has been consumed by her confusion at her father's sudden disappearance and her newly found companion's unconscious state. The Fennec kit had been nestled on her back before she fell through the portal and perhaps he would have been fine if she'd known how to fly. Much of her first year had been spent alone, wandering the wilds of Helovia in search of mamae after the amber mare disappeared into the sea; only catching brief moments and glimpses of both the sea soul and the golden prince. Yet even now, alone in a strange world she knew nothing about with a young companion to care for, she cannot bring herself to hate them. Instead she merely craves their attention, their presence.

The eerie quiet that had been blanketing the area is suddenly interrupted by the thundering, crashing sounds of a creature exploding through the dark forest. It was far enough away that her gaze remained trained on Elgar'nan, a single pale ear swiveling towards the source of the commotion. But then things are quiet again, except for the pitter patter of rain on the leaves, and the girl turns her full attention back to her young companion. Elgar'nan stirs every now and again but nothing is so steady and consistent as the expansion and contraction of his chest and belly with each breath. It seems like ages have passed with nary a flutter of his eyes. Ages she'd rather not spend in a foreign place such as this by herself.

Goodness only knows what's lurking amongst those shadows.

Rustling noises reach her ears again, only this time their softer and more deliberate instead of the panicked mess she'd heard moments ago. This particular change does pull her attention away from the Fennec kit, her heart thundering in her chest, uncertainty tainting her thoughts until the dark mare slips into view. Survival urges her to remain cautious, to not let her guard down, but her naivety and optimism shove the negativity aside - temporarily ignoring reality and logic. The starlit mare seems friendly enough. There is no aggression in her approach and she calls out, announcing her presence. Surely she wouldn't have done so if she'd meant to harm Bella or Elgar'nan? Fully embracing the mare's arrival as though she were an old friend, she merely watches with complete trust as the other lowers her muzzle to investigate Elgar'nan.

Bella nearly expected the friendly gesture of the mare's smile but what she didn't expect was the absurd loudness of her voice. 'HE'S ALIVE. IT'S OKAY.' the starry mare shouts, causing the yearling to jolt and gaze wide-eyed at the mare. Yet as unexpected as it was, she calms quickly; recovering her easy, friendly demeanor rather quickly. The girl nods lightly in response to her explanation. For several moments, the girl is quiet. She's never interacted with someone that couldn't hear before, her lack of experience leaves her without the knowledge of how to interact. Maybe, the yearling thinks, she can read lips since she can't hear sounds.' So with a bit of determination, she lifts her head to gaze squarely at the star speckled mare. "He fell." she admits. "He's just a baby. Hatched just before going through the portal."

It hadn't even crossed her mind that the mare could be from anywhere except Helovia (not her brightest moment to be sure) but it certainly helped her to relax even more. "Bella. From Helovia." the tawny filly introduces herself, taking care to use as few words as possible and enunciate as best she can. Everything seemed to be okay, at least for now.
