If the real thing don't do the trick
You better make up something quick

She stood with her head down low, legs splayed to keep herself balanced and to keep herself stationary. Sweat darkened her already ashy coat, the beads running down her face and spraying from flaring, overworking nostrils easily displayed the evidence of a struggle.

Letha's life here in the Rift had been nothing but a struggle.

Months had gone by without her seeing her parents, her siblings, or more importantly Makai. Her companion was ripped from her mind, from her soul, the moment her hooves touched this god-forsaken terrain. Letha endured months of psychological terror--she lost her family, her companion, her home; she gained something she never had--hearing. It was still terrifying. She still did not know how to communicate well. All living creatures she encountered from her entrance to the rift to her return to the portal have tried to kill her--no one wanted to talk. They only wanted to eat. Her once pristine, gold-touched coat was now littered with the nicks and marks and scars evident of living a life of a wildling.

Ocean blue eyes were wide and wild--resembling all too clearly the reflection of her grandparents.

All that kept her alive was the blood that ran through her veins--Ktulu the Constrictor and Gaucho the Wildfire.

A snap of a twig in the distance made her ears pin, and she snorted.

I am done running, she thought as her narrowing blue eyes dared whatever made noise to step before her.

Requiem couldn't remember how long she had been alone in the Rift after her family had been ripped apart. Her mother and father were nowhere to be found, nor was either of her siblings. They had all gone through the portal together, ushered by their mother, and yet none of them arrived together. She had long since given up on finding any of them and had, instead, begun focusing on forging new bonds with those that were in the same situation she was in... or at least similar situations.

Still, there was something that drew her back to the Portal again. Perhaps it was the idea of finding a lost soul and helping them like she had helped the strange stallion not so long ago. Or maybe she hadn't given up on finding her family as completely as she thought she had. Whatever it was she was there, wandering between the trees, smoke swirling around her legs, glowing eyes watching her every move.

The young girl tried her hardest to be quiet, not wanting to draw anymore attention to herself than she already was just by being in the forest, but she still managed to snap a twig underfoot. In reality it probably wasn't that loud, but in the deathly silent forest it sounded something similar to a gunshot and it made her wince. Requiem became still, gold rimmed ears tilted forward to listen for anything that might be approaching and when she heard nothing she continued forward, around trees and under branches.

And then she saw her.

It was like seeing a ghost. All the air felt like it was sucked from her lungs and she stood there for the longest, scarcely breathing, the sound of her heart roaring in her ears. "Letha?" Her sister's name fell from her lips, whispered. Unbelieving. "Letha?" A little louder this time. "LETHA!"

There's a split second where Letha cannot see anything. A red veil lowers over her ocean eyes, another snort pushing its way through flaring nostrils. The mare's back rounds and her haunches tuck beneath her. All she can think of is to use her height and increase it. Her thick, powerful wings flare at her sides and flap wildly. Her front legs lift from the ground and curl up to her chest. Her head stays low.

Suddenly the mare launches herself, head lowered with golden tipped ram horns ready to demolish whatever snapped the twig and was moving toward her.

She looked like a demon closing the distance between herself and the intruder. Her wild, twisted, matted hair flew around her arched neck and her wings continued to beat hard and blow smoke and dust around them. The red veil over her vision lifted at the last moment, her brain pushing itself to see what she was about to attack. Gold filled her vision and the mare faltered.

"ARG-" She bleated out, her legs flailing and her mind racing as she altered her course as to not hit the incredibly familiar thing. She stumbled to the left, head snapping high into the air and her eyes filling instantly with tears. Her sister--her baby sister--found her. Letha opened her mouth to speak, but no words fell from her lips. Tears streamed down her face, uninhibited, for the emotions that wracked her breast were unmanageable.

She took a step toward her younger sister, reaching her nose out toward her. Her body began to shake, overtaken completely by all of the emotions. Her tear-filled eyes asked one thing: is it really you?

Her sister's reaction was not at all what the gold splashed girl was expecting and for a moment she wondered if she had been mistaken. She wondered if it was only someone who looked like her sister. Her ears fell back, scarlet eyes widening and she backpeddaled. "Letha, stop!" She shouted, hoping despite her doubt that she had been right in assuming the mare was who she thought she was.

At the last moment her course altered, but Requiem continued backward several more steps before she finally stopped. Now that Letha was closer she could get a better look at her and concern filled her eyes as she took in the matted hair, sweat slicked skin, and she scars that littered her body. The Rift had been hard on her, obviously. it was no wonder she had reacted with such violence to being surprised.

Finally it seemed that her older sister had calmed and gathered her wits. "Don't cry, Letha." The younger girl murmured when she saw the tears on her sister's face. "It's okay. Everything's okay." And it would stay that way as long as Letha stayed with her.

The extended muzzle was enough of an invitation for Requiem. She rushed forward, wings spreading to wrap around Letha's shaking body. "I missed you." She whispered. "Welcome home."

Darkness comes and goes in waves, and it seems to surround you briefly while it searches you. It comes without a warning, yet the darkness isn’t the malicious kind. Instead, it twinkles with bits of starlight that can be captivating if looked at for too long. But it never lasts long enough, instead it twinkles out and leaves you the same as you were before.

Letha could barely grasp what was happening before her. Tears still streamed freely down her face, her ocean eyes searching all over Requiem's body. Some twisted form of relief flooded her body as she stepped forward. Before her the filly looked so much like Ma as concern washed over her face and she extended her wings. Letha could hardly breathe--was this really happening?

The athletic mare relaxed into the touch and comforting hold of her younger sister. She pressed her ram-adorned head gently into the younger girl's chest, letting her breathing come out in shaky, unhindered sobs. Every fiber of her being seemed to relax in the presence of her most beloved sister. She stayed in the embrace for several, long minutes. It seemed like an eternity.

Eventually, Letha regained her composure. Her breathing returned to normal and she blinked away the last tears from her ocean eyes. The grullo lifted her head once more for water to meet blood -- blue eyes on crimson. "Wh--" She attempted, her tongue thick and heavy inside of her mouth. For having her hearing returned to her, the girl never really learned how to speak properly. She knew only a few, broken words. "Where?" She finally managed, looking around at their surroundings.

Obviously, she meant, Where is our family? Where is Ma?

There was nothing Requiem wanted to do more than stop her sister from crying. It had been so long since she'd seen her -- they'd both practically been babies when they'd escaped Helovia. She held her sister for as long as the bigger girl would allow and when she felt that Letha needed space she finally let go and took a few steps back. Scarlet eyes roamed over her older sister's body, taking in the scars, the fresh cuts, the tangled mane, the tears, and her heart ached fiercely. Why hadn't she spent more time searching for her? Could Gabriel be out there searching for them? Their mother? Their father?

"Wh--?"

Requiem's ears tilted forward at the sound of Letha's voice.

"Where?"

"I don't know." Requiem answered, though she was totally unaware that Letha could actually hear her. The last time she'd been with her sister she had been totally deaf, only able to communicate by reading lips and body language. "I don't know if mom or dad ever made it through the portal." The gold marked girl admitted. "And ... I haven't seen Gabriel in ... I can't remember when I last saw him." She'd been on her own for so long that she'd lost track of time.

"There's a herd." She continued on. "We could go there if you want." Or they could continue to wander around the Rift. At this point Requiem didn't care what they did as long as they did it together.
