This was the third time that Evangeline had lived through the destruction of the place she called home. The first time she had been a foal in Isilme, running for her life as the mountains exploded and rained down around her. Everything had gone black and when she woke she found herself in a world that was vastly different from the one that she had known. It was at that point that she had discovered death in the form of a mercy killing. The second time her world had ended she was a bit older, acting as a shield for the PPG, so others could escape the shades that were tearing Isilme apart from within.

And now...

She was a great deal older now and had seen the writing on the walls, so to speak. When Helovia's gods had pulled foreign lands into their borders she had said to her companion that it wasn't a good idea. When the gods of those lands emerged and engaged in battle with Helovia's gods and citizens she had known that she had been correct. One by one they fell, but she had remained uneasy, not believing that the gods were actually dead.

Tallis had called her paranoid.

In the end she was proven correct, but it was nothing to gloat about. It wasn't anything to say I told you so about. It was just sad.

She had stood by watching as one after one the Helovians faced off against the almagalmation that had called itself Kisamoa. One by one they fell, adding to the turmoil and anguish that their families were feeling. It was with resigned acceptance that Evangeline slipped quietly through the portal and on to the next land that would be her home until that one, too, ended in disaster.

There’s light – and then darkness.

At first, it comes subtly, you can’t see when the light around you begins to dim, but briefly in the corner of your peripheral vision you see it decreasing.

Are you going blind? You can’t tell.

It’s gone, however, just about as fast as it came. Light returns, blinding and piercing to your eyes as the Portal slinks back to its hiding place.

You could still be what you want to —
(what you said you were when I met you)

Korri traversed the Portal on foot today. His wings folded loosely against his sides, he picked his way past and under snowbound trees. He no longer shied at the shadows or the strange lights playing in the depths of the forest around him. The Portal had yet to harm him; he ventured here only out of curiosity, to find any more strangers who might want a home in Halyven. To serve his crowns and prove his worth. To alleviate his boredom, too, and distract himself from the pressing absence of his raven.

Two seasons, now. She was so long lost to him.

He no longer made a pretense of looking for her here. Only let his eyes drift from tree to tree, his gaze soft and resigned. Did his own gods hate him so much they had cast him out alone? Or was the Rift so cruel it had taken her from him? For no reason? He had done all he could in this land, had been kind to it even if kindness was not in his nature, but here he was.

He was interrupted from his musings by a flash of color off to his right. Not something tricky — something real. Korri paused, his head lifting, and blinked. A horse — just a horse. No horn, no wings, large (of course) but blandly orange. Almost certainly not a native. Turning, Korri headed in the stranger's direction. His voice preceded him: "Hello, there." His light tone was more subdued than it often was, friendly but not bright. Not brilliant. He meant to approach only until they stood within conversing distance. Then he paused, his ears curiously up.

"I'm Korri," he said. A small nod of his head. "A scout with the Kingdom of Halyven. Are you lost?" Most he found in this forest were, but this stranger appeared perhaps a bit more composed than Baal had been. Perhaps she was merely older.

Upon entering the Rift, Evangeline could feel that something wasn't quite right. At first she couldn't place what it was and then, slowly, she began to relize that could no longer feel Tallis with her. He had been with her for so long and she had grown so accustomed to feeling the weight of his presence in her mind and soul that without him there she felt ... empty.

"Tallis?" She called the dragon's name, hoping that he was just taking a little bit longer to come through the portal, but when she looked up toward the trees she could see him there, brilliantly orange against the dark background. He stared at her with indifference and then he was gone, flying away without so much as a backwards glance. "Tallis!" And for the first time in as long as she could remember she was truly alone.

She almost gave chase, but a voice stopped her and she turned to look in his direction. "Hello." She echoed his greeting. "Evangeline." She looked in the direction that Tallis had flown then turned back to Korri. "Maybe." She said in response to his question of being lost. "Is this the Rift?"

She was distracted. Korri realized this a little after approaching her, as the echoes of her voice died in his ears. Tallis! A name? Of a friend, or maybe a god? He had no way of knowing, but he regarded her sympathetically. Arriving in the Portal was unpleasant to say the least — Korri remembered his own entrance well. Both the sudden solidity of the ground and the sudden, aching emptiness where his raven once lived. A vivid memory, a wound refusing to heal.

He swallowed all that feeling down.

"A pleasure, Evangeline," Korri said. He suspected her heart wasn't in the greeting, but manners were manners, so he responded in kind. His small head tilted a bit as he wondered what, exactly, was going through her head. At mention of the Rift, though, Korri's small ears darted up in surprise. "It is!" he replied. "You're better informed than most people I run across here. Were you looking for something in particular?"
