She was going to do something horrible to get something that could only benefit her. It was the epitome of selfishness- she knew that, but here she was, doing it anyways. To rid herself of the ache in her lungs and the cloudiness in her vision, she needed to do two things: harvest an Asulli's feather and help a foal find their parents. She would try to tackle the later first, but she was horrible with children and did not even know where her own babe was at this point in time. This meant that she would have to rip of an innocent beast's feathers, an act that would pain the animal extremely and possibly result in it's death. Not only were the Asulli elusive beasts, but they were incredibly shy and she was sure the moment they caught a glimpse of her vibrant body they would run away. Not only was she a naturally brightly-colored horse, but one of the two golden lockets that hangs around her neck is charmed to allow little sparkles to glitter her body beautifully. Today, mid-drench, was actually not raining, allowing any nearby animals the perfect view of her. There was no hope she would be able to take a feather from a living beast, perhaps she could find one dead.

After walking for several minutes, she started growing tired. The constant coughing from the burning-feeling in her lungs and the tears that fell from her stinging eyes from the smoke cloud around her that only she could see was wearing her out. She needed relief from the feeling, but there was never any. She had tried everything- drinking water, turning on her own fire to cancel out the smoke (this one worked horribly), swimming, sleeping, nothing worked. She knew she had to move on with the trial. She could not endure another second.

Despite how horrible she felt, she looked.. good. She hadn't looked good in a while. Where her ribs used to show was now just a fat flank. The bald patches had grown in new hair. The worn-out look in her feature had also vanished. The mare looked rather heathly and pleasant, something which she hadn't in what felt like ages. She kept her eyes peeled for any signs of Asullis, but halted for a moment, leaning against the trunk of a nearby tree for a quick break.

The scars from his fight with Ricochet tattooed his legs and belly. Healed and in far better condition then that of his opponent. The pain in his side was gone as well, though his ego was still very much bruised. Normally the stallion did not linger on failures for so long. Merely accepting his short comings after a few days of being irritated with himself. But this had been different. This was a loss in battle. It would continue to eat away at him until he challenged the dark man again, and won.

But until that day he came he would grow stronger. He was plenty fight in the physical department and he was always training his mind, but his magic was lacking. Like Aurelia he was also trialing for power. Though unlike her the rift's presence was less obvious. Only he could hear the whispers, feel the cold touch of a ghost as it haunted him. It constantly wailed because he ignored its pestering. His ears remained pinned back against his head to shield them from the dismal keen.

He was pretty sure he would go deaf before he accomplished his trail. Even his machines seemed upset by the crying, though whether it was because they were responding to the pain in his head or if it was due to the magical interference caused by this ghost, he was not sure. He would have to investigate later. It would be good to know if the magic of the rift was somehow upsetting the magic that coursed through his machines. It would be something to consider when undergoing future trials. He had yet to see Aurelia as he wandered through the forest. He certainly would struggle to hear her at this point.

Watcher's body emerged from the depth of the shadows, harsh features seemingly suspended between contentness and annoyance (she could never tell which with him). She watched him as the seconds passed, wondering how he had yet to take note of her. Those eerie pale eyes watched him with intense wonder, curious to know if he was here in flesh in blood or a trick that the Rift played on her fragile mind. Aurelia had been thrown through the portal half a year ago and she had only managed to run into him once in that time, but in the past week it seemed he had become a dependable constant part of her life, something that put her on-edge. Though she enjoyed his presence thoroughly, it was unusual for her to hang around this long. She had many tricks up her sleeve- should she be a magician, her greatest act would be disappearing, something she had always done... and done well, too.

Even the worry of growing too involved with one horse was not enough to dam the stream of excitement and anticipation that swelled and sloshed within her as she pushed off of the tree towards him. How the ground between them was erased she'd never recall. Perhaps it was a dance or hop, but one moment they were apart and the next she stood squarely before him, her features conveyed little, but she was visibly a more content healthier version of herself. Something Watcher had yet to see.

She searches his face, unnerved by the sheer blueness of his crystalline eyes. She had always believed that glacier eyes were ice cold, that they knew no warmth and never shared love. It had only taken one horse many moons ago to prove her wrong and now she was fully aware of the truth: the hottest fires always burn blue.

"What are you doing here?" The words came out low, with an agreeable trace of huskiness and with a hint of more power than her short body would suggest- not an educated voice, but one on which education had imposed a discipline which hadn't quite obliterated the rugged, untamed lilt in her words. It would be surprise to those that new her well to see her whisper, because she always seemed to have a million reasons to shout.

The air was thick and dense, the scent of moisture and mildew clinging to her airways like tar. The forest was ages past its former glory. The trees thick and old with roots twisting in all directions. It might once have been filled with bird-song and animals that roamed happily, but now it was simply eerie, with glowing eyes watching at every turn and the unmistakable sounds of evil Rift creatures scurrying to and fro. It's canopy was so dense that Aurelia could only see the occasional streak of sunlight which was shut out by the ever-moving leaves before it could even hit the ground which was composed of the remains of fallen trees of successive generations for centuries.

"Help me find an Asulli's magical feather," she pleaded.

He was alone. Then suddenly he wasn't. Aurelia stood before him a demanding question leaping off of her lips. He regarded her with his same cool expression. "Hello to you too." He said, his own words tumbling out of his mouth like silken molasses. Unhurried, but pleasant. Was that a hint of sarcasm one would hear? Aurelia always seemed to coax reactions and emotions out of the stallion that most could only dream of seeing. Not that anyone ever dreamed about him. Except maybe when K'yarie had a nightmare.

They held a strange relationship as both fire and water danced around each other. Never quite mixing, but finding a strange coexistence that ordered on pleasurable. He at least could admit that he was happy to see that she was looking healthier than before. "You're looking better." he said. Perhaps the biggest compliment one would ever hear from his lips. He was not one for flattery. He never actually tried to answer he question. Not that he had much of a chance before she was pleading for his help. He raised a brow. The ghost stopped wailing at the mention of the large creature. "Asulli feathers can be hard to find. The creature has been hunted to near extinction for them." He said, revealing for the first time his vast knowledge of his home. Did she even know he was a native? No, he never told her. "They feed on the glowing fungi in the forest, and glow themselves." He turned, motioning for her to follow. He knew of some places where the fungi grew plentiful.

She is enormous, though well hidden among the vibrant hues of the Rift’s Rainforest Cliffs, and she strides with silent steps through the fine drizzle of filtered rain.

The asulli is a shy creature, sensibly so, for she carries upon either side of her jelly-toned neck, a rim of enchanted feathers, long coveted by selfish poachers (like the ones who now stalk through her home). She is alert, watching her tranquil surroundings with soft, fearful eyes and nestled against the pillow of her glowingly striped flank is a newborn, far duller than his dam. The mother has no weaponry to defend him, no poisons to deter the predator from their prize, and her heart pounds desperately as she knows well that they are vulnerable.

Nevertheless she croons softly, soothing her tired babe and finds for him a place to sleep beneath the weeping boughs of a old, leafy glow cherry tree.

Watcher offered little information as to why he had been wandering through the lanky trees in the ever-changing shadows that they casted on the ground beneath their hooves. His retort drips with sarcasm that illicits a smirk from the babe. "Have you missed me so dearly that you've resorted to stalking?" Her voice is coated with a layer of exaggerated innocence; a sweetness that indicates that the remark is of comical origins. "Or were you.. just in the area?"

Most stallions she knows have become machines of their herds and loyalties, units in the systematic arrangement of large groups of horses, measured and valued only for their productivity. They are tense from subducting so much anger (at their herds, their leaders, the members, themselves), burying it deep into their soul so they can get up and do the same intensely tedious duties over and over. They become tense sires and controlling mates, piling damage onto damage until their life implodes. What is left of them after that is bitter confusion and an aura of resentment. She was never sure if Watcher was among these stallions, his distanced disposition and mysterious dislike (fear?) of revealing too much about himself were warning signs, yet he seemed different. Yet didn't they all seem different- each a liar or a thief or a sexist monster hidden under the guise of innocent, unique personas trying desperately to restart their crumbled lives. Wasn't that the reason she had experimented (and later fell in love with) mares? She could relate to a mare far more than she'd been able to with a stallion thus far.

She blinks as she looks away from Watcher, inhaling deeply as she refocuses on the task at hand. The mare would worry about the complexities of her ever-changing sexuality later.

Watcher reveals that asulli have been hunted to near extinction and a sharp pain twists in her gut as she swallows, unsure of how she was going to harvest a feather. Aurelia grew up surrounded by fire and ash and poison and death. It was the only thing she knew, so of course, she wanted it. She was never taught what love was- what kindness was. In fact, in her entire childhood, she recalls only one type of smile- a smile full of malice and cruel intent. She imagines a single, murdered asulli- its body strewn across the floor like a ghoulish mannequin, skin brutally tattered, leaving the esophagus and arteries sticking out much like rubber tubing, its fluorescent feather hanging from her maw like a trophy. Such a thought would have left her brimming with excitement and anticipation a few years ago, but much had changed about the mustang.

In her time wandering lost and lonely, in the months when she'd flee Helovia before returning, there was a saying that would remind the golden babe how little she could see with just her simple eyes, but how much she could see with her pulsing, humming heart. They would say that all the eyes could tell you is the result of what happened, never the reason, the intention, the deep emotions that swim below the surface. The thought of violently ripping an asulli's delicate tendril from its massive body, instilling an insatiable pain (if not death) in the harmless being made her feel nauseous and guilty. She would not be able to see with her eyes the amount of pain that would be dealt should she rip a feather off of the gentle giants, only with her heart would she know the true implications of her actions. She wasn't sure she could do it.

Watcher turns to lead her away, claiming he knows where they can be found. As he motions for her to follow, her heart stutters in her chest and she can feel the gentle tickle of hundreds of butterflies fluttering within her stomach. She doesn't know why, but the warmth of a rosy blush emerges on her porcelain features as she falls into line behind him.

Only a minute or so after they began their trek, Aurelia sees something move in her peripheral vision. With no warning or noise, she halts and twists her head towards it. It takes her a moment to make out exactly what she sees, the fluorescent markings of the beast blending in exquisitely with the neon colors of the forest. When she makes out the form of an asulli, she burst out of the shadows and into view through low-hanging branches, ruffling the leaves that decorate the trees and making an unafraid commotion. "Hey! I've got a question," she somewhat hollers at the creature (unaware of the halfway sleeping babe by the mother's side).

It is fairly obvious that Aurelia is not hunting the mother. She is not even attacking the mother. It is also equally clear that she is horribly unaware of the asulli's timid nature and dislike of horses (as they've been mercilessly hunted by them for what could be centuries). Aurelia's eyes flutter to the ground where the asulli child, that she did not know existed a mere 10 seconds ago, has begun to rest. The mare halts immediately, her jaw hanging open as she realizes that the larger beast is actually a mother, just like herself. "I'm sorry," she whispers as she hopes she has not caused too much of a disturbance in the child's sleep. The mare doesn't even question if these animals speak her language (which they probably do not).

Her trial was going to shit at this point because there was no way in fuck she was going to savagely murder a mother and leave the child to fend for itself or murder the child and leave the mother depressed for years to come.

sorry for the length, i'll make it shorter next time- here is a summary:

she follows ruwin for a bit before noticing the asulli mom and son. she is unaware of the extent of their timid nature and  begins loudly walking towards them, claiming she has a question. noticing the sleeping child, she grows marginally quieter and halts, apologizing for the noise she made. @Ruwin

Aurelia was the first to spot their target. Barging forward like as loudly and unceremoniously as a bull elephant with cymbals upon its feet, swinging a club made of clanging bells. He had no chance to warn her that these creatures were timid. Made so by the many who had hunted and killed their kind over the centuries. No, he had no such chance. He could only observe the scene as it unfolded. His eyes were acutely aware of every detail. The mother and her child, the humidity in the air to the sounds of the forest around them. He took great interest in the change in Aurelia, as she went from purposeful to hesitant. The way her entire demeanor changed. He knew. In that moment he understood, Aurelia would not kill the mother or her babe.

He held no doubt that the woman was powerful and destructive. But in this moment, he saw the tender warmth that fire could be. Perhaps it was simply she was too weak willed, or had never truly killed before. But Ruwin wished to believe it was another reason that stayed her hoof. She was battling this within her. To go after her goals and seek power, no matter the cost. Or leave it all for the sake of an single, innocent life. He came up beside her, feeling as though he should offer some form of support. His steps, quiet, almost reverent as he approached.

While he himself had slain another, and had a hoof in the deaths of many more. His actions had been against that which he felt was wicked and needed to fall. Gazing upon the mother and her child, he too found himself unwilling to take their lives. They were innocent, gentle creatures that sought only to live. But this was not his choice. "Perhaps we should move on?" He inquired. He would not press her to leave. Though the way he held himself, as if in reverence of the mother, made it clear that he wished to leave them be. This was, ultimately Aurelia's trial. Her path to choose. But as a mother herself, would she be able to slay the parent or the offspring? Was she truly as merciless as the fire she embodied?

He would support the mare he had come to feel fondly towards. A friendship, he was almost willing to admit. There strange relationship had led to a few interesting conversations, and events thus far. He was curious to see where it would lead them in the future. Even more curious to see how the mare would react to this situation. It was all rather fascinating to watch. The pivotal point where she decided just how much gaining what she desired meant to her. As well as how easily she could give up a part of herself that she would lose, should she take the life of blameless being.

He held his own, selfish hope that she would spare them. He had no desire to see that ember leave the fiery mare. Fore without some value of life, what was there to stop the fire from devour everything in its wake? Call him a hypocrite for feeling so after committing the crimes he had. He would not care. Who wasn't a hypocrite at one point or another in their life? He was sure he would be one on more than one occasion in the course of his existence.

There is just no hiding from the sensitive eyes of these—the Rift’s new apex predators…

The first on the scene, bathed in the breath of late-day gold, burst forward like a swift-moving screecher and the tranquilly that had been is, broken harshly by her voice. The fearful new mother’s cover is blown and her heart pounds so loudly against her hidden ears, so violently anxious, that she begins to feel faint. She cannot tell whether the feathered predator means to harm her—she can only assume the worst, and when she reaches with a plush, stripped mouth to stir her young, she discovers his fleshy body already pinned, trembling against her side.

The horse-beast growls in an unfamiliar tongue—she feels, with murderous intent—and her eyes have glossed over with dismal resignation. She cannot protect her helpless infant; she would sacrifice herself, yet she without her it will surely not survive. The soft, luminous skin wrapped around fatty brawn ripples frantically, she cannot think, unintentionally frozen to the spot. Her babe stares up with wide amethyst-tinged eyes; there is beautiful innocence pooling within, trust, confusion. His proboscis-like nose ventures nearer, tasting the strange flavour of the aliens which linger between the foliage.

The nearest monster whispers, and he mumbles softly in response.
