All Yves ever wanted was to study the natural world. It would be just grand if that world would stop trying to kill him for, like, two goddamn seconds.
Circumstance turned the would-be academic into a renegade. With a long string of broken relationships in tow, Yves has turned his frustration outward. He has always had that impulsive devil-may-care streak; that streak grew precipitously after whatever supernatural forces decided it would be fun to derail his life. His struggles had to be someone else's fault, right? Well, maybe he deserves some of the blame for the relationships. But the portals that keep jerking him into different universes definitely are not his fault, and getting yanked between dimensions without rhyme or reason has started to piss him off.
Despite his frustration with the universe, Yves remains an undeniably social creature. He finds comfort in his kin and enjoys nothing more than theorizing for hours on end with some whip-smart compatriots about the nature of existence, accompanied by some good-natured ribbing. Much to said compatriots' chagrin, Yves delights in playing the devil's advocate. "Not everything has to be a debate," some former paramour had once said in the waning days of their relationship. She was a sweet fool.
As the story so often goes, things came to a head around Yves' fourth birthday. Four years was enough time for his mother to place all her aspirations squarely on Yves' shoulders, realize he would never be the stallion she wanted him to be, and grow to resent him for his failures. Yves was surprisingly robust to this resentment; as long as he could continue his studies and talk shit with his favorite sister, he was happy enough. But his mom wasn't. With Yves' replacement ready in the wings, she ordered his brother to chase him from the herd, a task he completed as dutifully as you would expect.
The Shade had already tightened the noose around Helovia's neck by the time Yves made his faltering way to that world. He settled into the World's Edge with just enough time to watch everything fall apart around him. By the time he realized he should be fighting back instead of just watching and offering snarky commentary to the survivors, it was well and truly too late. He fled like all the others, but somehow he missed the exit for the Rift for many months. His hard-won knowledge of plants kept him alive during this time, aided by a magic he never realized he had: the ability to decontaminate environmental toxins with his breath, rendering anything he consumes safe to eat or drink. He wandered the dying land, lonely and increasingly frustrated, cussing out gods who had long since stopped listening. He survived, albeit discontentedly. Settled into a routine. Made it work.
But the Portal found him eventually.
