He’s a beast. A stallion of massive proportions and mixed bloodlines. Draft and stock horse running in his blood in an amalgam that allows for defined and powerful sinew, a towering height and a clear lack of feathering. His features are rather angular, his gaze intense and holding the ferocity of a gale at sea. The thick scent of rum, salt water and gunpowder mingles with the strong scent of a dominant and powerful stallion. His body is one of power, meant for brute force and headlong charges into the tide of battle. Used to leading the charge he bears scars across his body from both combat injuries and clear marks of whips lashes on his back. His right shoulder bears a brand that is a clear reminder of what he once was. Property. The thick tresses are the color of the night sky bleeding into the paler hues open ocean. Tied in braids in some areas he bears an earring in each ear. His body is a slow gradient working down his form from a deep teal into a paler color that matches the ends of his thich, beachy waves. His chest and flank show much lighter hues that near white in some areas with stripes dancing across his shoulders and what seems to be paler flecks of dust like constellations in the night sky littering his hide. Darker stripes extend from his eyes and work along the curvature of his neck, his muzzle finished with a white snip that shows hints of pink skin. His step is one of a dangerous stallion, with pride and confidence in his stride, head held high and a true burning hatred searing his soul. This beast has no mind to give you any quarter and he cares not for your life. Willing to look you in the eye and take it as he sees fit. There is little holding back the turbulent squall that is Captain Calhoun Ryder.
{ Intelligent | Passionate | Fierce | Will Kill You Attitude | Rough | Crude | Lewd | Violent | Callous | Hardened | Adaptable | Brutal | Rage Filled}
Ryder is rough, crude, lewd and has a propensity for breathtaking and brutal violence. He has been around long enough that he has grown to hate most of the world and the progress it has made. As well as the virus and everything it has taken from him. He holds a self-loathing towards himself as well as those who have caused him grief and society in general. Because he has done so many horrible things in his life he is callous and unfeeling towards those he harms when it is needed to gain him something. He cares not who he hurts and has lost the ability to feel regret for when he does commit these horrible acts. In truth, he might not even feel remorse for previous acts either. However, he is also passionate about what he loves and what he desires be it physically or mentally. He has no preference in gender so his lust for physical pursuits, be it carnal desires or beating someone within an inch of their life or outright butchering them, is shared equally among genders... be they male, female or other. Despite his brutal nature and desire for power and use of force, he is also quite intelligent. He can improvise on a moment's notice and has a stubborn will to survive no matter what the odds. A seafaring life has hardened him to extreme weather and he can adapt quite easily to any climate. It has also left him with skills in battle most do not have as combat is often something one sees when you lead a crew of violent and sinister pirates. As old as he is he expects respect from those younger than he and he doesn’t take lightly to those who think they can shove him around. While he doesn’t take physical pleasure in causing others pain and suffering he doesn’t find problems with using force and torture to get what he needs or get his revenge should you do him wrong. He’s a pirate. What did you expect? Unicorns and fairy dust?

Ryder's life was never conventional. Nor was it normal. To be exact it was completely opposite of either of those fields of thought. He was born on a cold winter morning in January in 1680. A small shack on the coast of England. He was the first child of five but the only one to be "sent away". His father was a drunk, an abusive drunk with gambling problems. Any money he earned as a dock worker was spent frivolously on gambling and booze. His mother was a woman with a wandering eye and greed to match her husband's drunken nature. Between the two of them, they barely kept their heads above water financially.
Ryder's arrival into the world meant trouble. He was three when they sold the boy into slavery. A man name Altos purchased him. He ran a labor camp on a island under English rule in the Caribbean. A former pirate pardoned by the Crown he took his crew to the island and put them to work out of his own fears. In turn, it began to reveal a darker nature in the man. Ryder was not the first to have the man make inappropriate advances and attempts on. Nor was he the first child he plied with alcohol or drugs to get what he wanted. He was the first to fight back, however. Altos never laid a hand on him in that manner because of the demon child's fierce nature and refusal to back down in the face of someone who terrified even full-grown men. It would perhaps be his saving grace.
He was thirteen when he managed his escape. And while he could have run and perhaps even made it out alive without risking his own life. But he saw an opportunity. When his Master was speaking to the English Navy Captain sent to check on the island Ryder struck. A cunning mind made quick work of grabbing the first weapon he could find and with strength and skill he should not have even for his species he killed Altos. Or so they all thought. But before he could be captured by the Navy man and his crew the child bolted. It was not long before he managed to get off the island and another few months found in in England. But he was cornered by a group of Navy men. And very quickly press ganged into service where abuse once more became the norm. Though the Captain took pity on the child and did see to training him himself. But when Edward “Blackbeard” Teach came calling Ryder took his chance and while the crew was distracted he slaughtered them one by one. By the time the navy vessel was boarded Ryder had effectively ended an entire crew of Navy men. Teach saw potential. Ryder saw more chains.
Sheer numbers would put him out cold but not before he took out several of the crew. Some even killed. When he came to Ryder found himself on the infamous vessel The Queen Anne's Revenge. It took days for Edward Teach and the trusted Surgeon of his crew, a man known as Arronax to break through to the child but the truth came out. Before he had ever been in that Hell they had been there. Separately of course but it would be Arronax and Teach who planned the assault and in turn gave Ryder his first taste of freedom. Teach quickly began training him. Before long he was crewing the ships Vanguard and by age 17 he was the youngest Quartermaster to ever sail for Teach. He was ruthless, cutthroat and deadly. Little could stop him.
He was 25 when they made port in Nassau, New Providence Island and it was there he met a young woman, a shrewd businesswoman with an eye for what she wanted. It wasn't long before they had a strong relationship going. But when she tried to get him to change his ways and leave the crew he refused. Her nature took over and she drugged him. His honesty with her allowed her to know the truth. And in turn nearly killed him. With the help of some trusted employees, she sent him back to Altos. Who was more than happy to try to get his revenge. The fight was bloody but in the end, Ryder was buried, naked in a shallow grave and left to die. What Altos didn't plan on was Ryder's stubborn will to survive. He clawed his way out of the grave and during the hour in which Altos ate before his slaves were allowed to, Ryder found a log felled the day before during labour. He broke off a large piece and ran the man through from behind. The sharp piece of wood pierced the man's heart, having gone right through his lung left lung next with the sharp angle used from right to left.
Ryder did not return to Teach's crew. Instead, he chose a different course of action, with the slaves he'd freed they managed to use coin Ryder stole from Altos and some he saved to make a purchase. A two-masted brigantine that was the stepping stone to capture a first-rate man of war which he would rename The Ranger and claim as his own. The beast of the vessel served him for years. He took the beast back to Nassau. And there he killed the woman who he once loved. Filled with rage still Ryder’s attention turned on the Navy and he began his reign of terror against them, earning himself a name that struck fear in the hearts of anyone. A man with power to bend the wind to his will and summon storms capable of taking a slow vessel and propelling it at incredible speeds. But when the British Navy announced war on piracy Ryder only took this as an insult and a declaration of war against him himself and he had every intention of killing every last Navy Man he could. No matter the costs. If no pirate would step in to lead the charge of their own free will Ryder was of the mind he had to. He would be the first into the fray, as he always had been when he took a prize with his crew. Perhaps his violent tendencies made him a monster to them. But they had been the ones to forge him.
It was during a battle at sea Ryder was pulled into the Rift.
